Most people get 14mm tips and trim them to fit. Trying to match a tip exactly to a ferrule is not easy.

Wouldn't that require really large squares or dowels? On a 1 inch dowel, you can probably only change the angle of the grain along the shaft a couple degrees.

I've tried that, and it always puts a "kink" in the shaft where the tapers meet, if you look straight down it. Doesn't really affect the play too much, but does look a little weird.

Another option is to put a collar on the shaft only. When this type of cue fails, it is almost always the shaft at the joint end splitting. A collar is cheap insurance, and phenolic is quite strong.
