Need to know size and length of shaft but sounds like its over 30" with long skinny taper. If that's the case, a new shaft with a different conformation would solve the problem.

If the tubes are left empty the hit has a hollow sound some find disturbing. Carbon fiber is a very strong material there's no need for reinforcement.

There is lots of different foams available and the added weight can vary. For the most part the inserts have to be custom made to fit.

I run length wise grooves for glue relief but they also lock the pin. I would dare say most of us use slow curing epoxy. :) Not that much of a problem removing.
