Using a good sealer after grain sanding with 320, maybe even a couple of times and then sanding with the fine stuff before any wax and burnish helps a lot.

I wonder why. I always clean up the ferrule when I install tips, but shaft condition has nothing to do with that. If the shaft needs work that's a different job.
