I just think it's too tall for the 5" Z travel I have to play with. I'll probably just buy a sherline rotray table and tailstock and mount it on a low profile piece of extrusion to get me by.

Not sure about the cutout. Check the track that the cross slide pinion gear rides in. If you get a wood chip in it, it can cause problems like you described when tapering.

Looks very old. Shockingly butt and shaft are almost gun barrel straight still. It does not have the green titlist sticker. Points are very close to even as well. Plays great.
