    Serious question?

No shit. Cars too complicated to work on, music that lacks gusto, social gambling becoming passe’, younger generations apparent strangers to language or dress decorum, etc., etc. Extended life expectancy has it’s downsides.

    Serious question?

I don’t play or watch golf, so I wonder if cell phones are such an issue there also? Do courses restrict them? I can’t imagine they would allow play to slow while golfers chatted or site-surfed (?), not to mention ringing while you putted.

    Serious question?

Even at very large venues, tables available to the public (during tournaments) are often not the same, maintained, or set up as well as what the pros are competing on. BTW: (RKC?) Just curious. How significant is the difference in how a table plays depending on who recovers/sets it up (assuming...

    Efren's "Take my Watch" shot

30 yrs. ago, I’m sitting right next to the table during one of Efren’s first serious straight pool tournament competitions (Portland). If I remember correctly, he came to the table left with only an extremely difficult, near table-length combination that ‘I’ would likely have studied for several...

My scratch % is high on this break...

Top right might leave the CB against the bottom of the pack. I like top left, which usually goes two rails back to center table before the pack can spread/interfere. Topspin won’t help anyway if you hit the rack hard at the wrong spot (you’ll be in the corner pocket before the CB stops...

My scratch % is high on this break...

Actually having second thoughts re: using ‘follow’. While the more acute angle break largely eliminates scratching in the corner, I’ve noticed a CB following thru the pack sometimes gets kicked into the side. So, drawing off into center table (and away from the resulting melee) might be more...

My scratch % is high on this break...

“Up table playing combos” beats scratching. “Stuck to the pack” suggests inadequate draw (happens to me often when contact is between the one & four, and the rack is less than perfectly tight). “Ideal” break position: Shaw’s record run indicates a more acute angle works better, since the scratch...

My scratch % is high on this break...

Your overhead photo doesn’t show the pocket, so can’t tell where the CB will strike the rack. Applied english is rather irrelevant if you hit the breakshot really hard, since the CB is thus still sliding. If the natural target impact point is downtable side of the contacted OB, and the carom...

    perimeter light

Myself personally (especially as my cataracts progress), I DO appreciate it. It’s just a nostalgia issue. Greenleaf & Mosconi seemed to manage ok somehow under traditional lighting. No matter how well I ever played under modern lights, I would always feel like I had an unfair advantage in...

    perimeter light

Just watched the ’Hustler’ movie again on tv. I noticed the table lighting used at ‘Ames’ was the same I grew up with (3 low-hanging shaded incandescent bulb fixtures). I accept that equipment progression is inevitable (worsted cloth, resin composite balls, etc.), though I can’t help feeling...

Pro Players Aversion to Using Inside Spin

In my experience, if the balls are polished and the cloth is new, inside will only take significantly on very soft shots where the CB hits the rail at a near 90 degree angle. I’m always surprised when the inside seems to disappear after a firm hit comes off the cushion at an acute angle.

Hand Rack vs Template vs ...

I occasionally throw $50 up the table, because I understand that sometimes ‘losing‘ is an unavoidable aspect of gambling. I tend to avoid playing those who can never stand to lose, since I can’t shake the suspicion re: what they might be tempted to do in order to win. A ‘bad rack’, much like a...

Hand Rack vs Template vs ...

I thought players were prohibited from challenging when the ref. racks (?), so if your opponent is acting as referee, shouldn’t that apply? I deal with this issue routinely (opponent gives a slug-rack, nothing drops…he runs out. I rack tight….he breaks and runs out). Mostly it’s due to...

"Last five" video from Accu-Stats and Phil Capelle

I have a tendency to over-cut shots toward the right (I’m right handed), and under-cut those toward the left. Maybe that has some bearing on the issue (?), especially re: which side to favor in order to get the strongest break without scratching.

Cue Tip Contact Myth-Busting Truths in Super Slow Motion

‘New/clean’ balls: I have found there is a wide variation in ball composition, polish chemicals (and cloth) effect (my 2 yr. old 760 is still so slick every slow bank still goes WAY wide, especially in a winter/forced-air heated environment…I also keep a space heater under the table). Even...

Cue Tip Contact Myth-Busting Truths in Super Slow Motion

Actually, the degree of polish on the CB (and it’s construction/type) has the most influence on draw RPMs (IMHO).

Cue Tip Contact Myth-Busting Truths in Super Slow Motion

I can validate that. I HAVE noticed that the tall ‘milk dud’ I’m using now deflects more than the LePro that my cue originally came with.

Cue Tip Contact Myth-Busting Truths in Super Slow Motion

Don‘t know what he was using with Joni, but before with Witherspoon he just plugged straight into a point-to-point/all tube Fender amp. The last time I saw him, he played thru a stack of computers. Not saying a synthesized tone is bad (it IS just a matter of personal taste), it‘s only that the...

Cue Tip Contact Myth-Busting Truths in Super Slow Motion

Funny how that is. When you finally find that ‘perfect’ guitar, that fits you like a glove, you might abuse it, but also likely defend it with your life (like some married guys & their wives😁). I have a cheap/beat guitar that isn’t worth much, but am so in love with it’s tone, if it needed a...
