    Missing shots more often?

Started this thread Aug. 3 last. And I finally filled my prescription glasses just before last Christmas. Really?!? Anyway, those cheap readers were 1.25 but I was given a 1.5 prescription. Wow! And the distance glasses sharpen things right up. It is like having a brand new pair of eyes...

Catfish, Hard Times Bellflower regular (2 nostalgic photos)

Am I blind? Where is it? Maybe I have a slow download? I don't see it or a link.

Catfish, Hard Times Bellflower regular (2 nostalgic photos)

That's Catfish on the right. Never did know his true name. Going to the left is Ismael "Morro" Paez. Next going to the left is another regular. Don't know his name or pool background. But he was usually at HT's. And of course to the far left is Francisco "Django" Bustamante. Catfish was...

    Missing shots more often?

Did you ever see those commercials where it is said, "It's good enough." And then they reply, "Good enough is not good enough." That is certainly true of sports. I am thinking that if you have any problems with vision you cannot see detail and accurate depth of field. So you cannot line up...

New York State Annual Pool Championship

I have been rethinking. I met "Rick" in early 1975 at Cherry Point MCAS. He was a Staff Sgt. His specialty was EOD Explosive Ordinance Disposal. He worked with high explosives. This sort of work would require a very delicate touch. And he had that. I figure this specialty provided a...

New York State Annual Pool Championship

New York State Annual Pool Championship Does the state of New York still put on an annual championship? I met a guy, I think his name was Rick, around 1975 and hung out with him for a while. He told me that he came in second place in the New York State Annual tournament. Am I right thinking it...

    Missing shots more often?

I downloaded a video I think it was from Youtube a few years ago. It is the 1988 US Open 9 Ball Championship at Cesar's Palace in Las Vegas. There are three matches: Howard v Sigel, Hall v Sigel, and Sigel v Strickland. There is one camera shot of Earl, a tight head and shoulders shot, where...

Rack 'em up with Artie Bodendorfer

Rack 'em up with Artie Bodendorfer I think I read in a recent post some interest in One Pocket Hall of Famer Artie Bodendorfer. Here is a link to a very interesting interview he gave to Steve Booth in 2006. https://www.onepocket.org/rackem-up-with-artie-bodendorfer/ And if you want to see...

Best Player that Quit Early on

I decided to Google Ross Keith Thompson and the first top and the only hit was from onepocket.org If you go to the site and then go to the forum page search for Ross Keith Thompson. He has made many posts. The last one he made was August 3, 2021. He has lots of great stories. Read about how...

Buying a Cue sight unseen? Better think twice.

So I am not the only one. Didn't think so. My advice is probably good advice if you have any doubts. I am sure most of you know of highly reputable cue makers. But again these times can make people crazy desperate: momentary temporary insanity lapses in judgement. The wheels can just come...

Best Player that Quit Early on

Keith Thompson apparently 1970. It doesn't look much like he did when I saw him. If this is 1970 then I must have seen him with Cole in 1968 - 1969.

Buying a Cue sight unseen? Better think twice.

This reminds me, back around 1970 I saved up my money and bought a Palmer cue. I had the pool hall owner order it for me. When it arrived at the pool hall I was really excited. I opened the package up and it looked great to me at the time. Then I screwed on the shaft. The screw and hole...

Buying a Cue sight unseen? Better think twice.

I have the text messages still on my phone stating the problems over time and even a picture of the unsigned check. But this should in no way reflect on any cue makers you know. I just cannot divulge the maker. Like I said, these have been trying times. But my advice still holds, at least...

Buying a Cue sight unseen? Better think twice.

Buying a Cue sight unseen? Better think twice. Times are tough for pool. Covid hammered the economy. In times like this even the best can lose it. I had decided to buy a cue about a year ago. Well known maker. To make a long story short: paid up front. Got the cue in the mail and the...

Best Player that Quit Early on

You look familiar. Were you ever a regular at Hard Times Bellflower? Because if you were I know you have a tale to tell about Cole and Ritchie Florence.

Best Player that Quit Early on

Come to think about it I can see it now, the dent was in the front left fender. I never forgot that shot but I never knew Keith's name except for Cole calling him "Squirrel." I would ask everyone I met who it might be. They all knew THE Squirrel but this was a kid Cole called Squirrel. Then...

Best Player that Quit Early on

Let me add, Keith came in 2nd in one pocket and first in 9 ball. this gave him the all around. I saw Keith once, Cole Dickson came in off the road in Fremont California. He arrived in an old faded VW beetle. It had a large dent in the front right fender. Said they hit a deer somewhere...

    Missing shots more often?

You are correct. Very astute. Yes, these cheap readers for one showed me that I need glasses. They clearly magnify and I can see clearly and easily from about 1 foot to 9 feet. I also use my television as a computer monitor. I have noticed that the print of file names in folders is slightly...

Where is there a good pool hall in the LA / SoCal area?

You really gave me great info. Alhambra 36 miles and Santa Monica 47 miles and Mr Lucky in Torrance 36 miles. Hard Times Bellflower was 21 miles from Santa Ana. Danny Ks 6 miles. I called Mr Lucky. They are expensive and no discounts. I went to Good Times in Lakewood. It is more of an...

    Missing shots more often?

The only way you could know me is if we met at Hard Times in Bellflower in the past 5+ years. I am not a very good player but I just discovered how to sight a shot precisely just as the pandemic started. You need excellent eyesight but you also need to know how to use what your see.
