I agree with all that cutting the 8 in the corner is a much better option. Your are probably not going to change his mind about shot selection though. Just flow with it and he will come around on his own.

I think Shaun chose the correct pattern, but obviously failed to execute. In my opinion his first draw shot was a bit too much which made his second shot a bit more challenging than it should have been.

Just a guess, but maybe the wrong slate for the table/rails? Shelf is way too deep. What do the side pockets look like?

Here is a pic of the typical side pocket setup for home tables with pocket irons. Notice the big hole in the end of the rail, that’s where the side pocket ear goes in, and the counterbored hole in the bottom (Top in this pic) is where the bolt and washer go that holds your pocket from swiveling...

More than likely the pocket ear screws are loose. You will need to remove all the rail bolts and shift the top over enough to expose the screw heads. You can then tighten all those screws, and resecure the top with all the rail bolts. Be sure to not over tighten those screws.

I still think the stock (unmolested) GC’s with its cavernous corners, and even bigger side pockets will be much easier than a Diamond of any variety. It’s hard to compare though because most of the GC’s have been tinkered with by now. I always loved to hear Grady talk about those cavernous...
