If it's one of Jack's cases it's made using Wicket and Craig veg tanned leather. I don't believe Jack would ever use anything other than leather, he was very proud of his work and wouldn't have done anything to jeopardise his reputation.
I don't think most people have any idea how long it takes to build a case, lots of steps and lots of waiting on things to dry are involved. I had guys think it only took two days to build a fully carved case, it takes that long to draw the pattern.

Ususally you can just pull the entire tube out, material and all by grabbing the material in the tube and giving it a yank. I know my 2x4 tube cases fit a 2x4 JB interior so maybe this will work for you. If you can get it out and the tubes don't fit you can always put the old one back in.
