    Johnston City, Stardust Days

My life long friend Bobby Taylor and myself left Houston area two weeks before Johnston City in September of 71. We hustled small town poolrooms for almost two weeks and made about 800$ before arriving in Johnston city two days before the one pocket division started. I posed for a few pictures...

    Johnston City, Stardust Days

I quit playing in October of 71 while Johnston City tourney was going on but decided to go to the Stardust in first of April in 72 to try to pick up some fast cash. Practiced two days before I flu there and came in third in the one hole division and went cold turkey just before my 20th...

    Johnston City, Stardust Days

Danny Diliberto won the 14-1 and All around in 1972 at Johnston City. It was the last tournament held. I saw him at Johnston City or Vegas in 70, 71 or 72 but never spoke with him or see him play but no doubt he was one of the Giants back in the day. My condolences to his family! The old...

What do you do ..when putting in the work doesnt work?

I went cold turkey in 72 and haven’t practiced hardly at all! There was nothing there unless you enjoyed staying broke lol. Worked at champion papers for four plus years and then Shell oil for 34 years and retired from there with a good pension check and saved quite a bit of money in their...

How good was Jimmy Mataya in his prime? Should he be in the HOF?

If there is a legitimate hall of fame there’s numerous players from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s that should be honorable mention! Mataya being one of them! He was a solid niner and 14-1 player. There was also great Niners and one holers back in the day that didn’t play 14-1. Cole Dickson was a...

Are Top Level Pool Players Better Today?

There was no good money tournaments back in the day like there is today! Most players just relied on gambling as an income and lived out of a suitcase! That being said none of them had a break cue. Some players used a heavy house cue to break with as a break cue! But most of the good players...

    Practice

I’ve read post that some of you’ve made about practice habits to improve your game wether it be 9 ball, one hole, snooker or whatever. If any of you want to take your game to a higher level practice 14 and 1 for 2-3 months a few times a week. Place a makeable ball near the rack and pocket the...

    Walking with Giants 1970

Played Ronnie the first time in 1969 in Houston Tx. During the invitational nine ball tourney, I was barely 17 yrs old not 16.5 years like I’ve posted before, my mistake! We played even one hole, he played one handed I played two handed! Beat him six in row for 50 a game, he called me a hub cap...

    The magnificent Irving Crane

This is the only photo I know of myself playing in the all around against Ronnie Allen and Lassiter. I flew from Atlanta back to Johnston city and my decent cloths were in my suitcase which was sent to the wrong city and I slept in that rag of a shirt and had to play the all around the next day...
