I agree about Maguire's temperment. Of all the top 10 or 16 players I would say he's the most easily rattled. I know its still a long shot but it Maguire is still out of form and Alex gets hot which could rattle Maguire, I could just about see it happening in a short race. However if the...
Maguire is one of the top players but the only saving grace for Alex is that I believe Maguire called this past snooker season the "season from hell". He may not have his form back yet...pulling off an upset against a top 16 player could really give Alex confidence.
I think Alex is the 2nd or tied for 2nd on the top up list....so if I'm reading the draw correctly he would have to play either Matthew Stevens or Stephen Maguire in the first round! That's rough!
Good luck ti Alex if he plays.
Yeah I hope he wins...if he's on the tour then we'll have long threads like these for every event he plays in. There are 11 or 12 ranking events but there are also a lot of non-ranking events also and they have decent payouts, certainly a lot more than major pool events.
I agree with what many posters have said - he has to qualify for the tour first, if he does that (and it won't be easy) that puts him at a ranking of 117-128th. He then has to play the pros in ranking events this season...that's a whole different level of snooker. If he can even get his ranking...
Actually, I believe 365 is Mosconi's high run on a 5 x 10 table. I know he ran 353 on a 5 x 10 and that was a record, but he soon after ran the 365 while the 5 x 10 tables were still the table used but I dont know if it was ever stated clearly that it was a 5 x 10. Greenleaf ran 276 and Crane...
Onofrio Lauri died while playing pool. So the story goes, he was at the Golden Cue in Queens NY, when he pocketed a ball and then said, as if he knew he was about to die "that was my last shot", and then died right there on the table.
As far as skill goes I'd say they were both even but Hopkins seemed to come through better in major events, winning the world 14.1 championship as well as winning the u.s. open 9 ball event twice....Rempe never won either one.
Definitely not his first 14.1 tourny. He played in the 1993 U.S. Open for sure and I'm pretty sure he played in another at the same time period of the 1993 event.
I remember the story of the 589 ball run for about as long as it happened. I never doubted it for a second. I saw Mosconi in a couple of exhibitions in the 70's when he was supposedly well past his prime, well if that was past his prime I shudder to think of what his prime was like! He was...
Pocket size can be deceiving when viewed on video as opposed to seeing it in person. I've seen video footage of matches played on a table that I personally played on that had 4.5" pockets. When I saw the video the pockets looked huge! Balls were dropping like crazy. Also the new cloth makes them...
IMO, when Ervolino was at his best - late 60's to early 70's, I can see him giving 9/8 to almost anyone. The only exceptions would have been Ronnie Allen, Jersey Red, Ed Kelly and maybe Artie Bodendorfer.
I have to say I find it hard to believe Orbach was ever a 100 ball runner. I saw him play several times at Amsterdam Billiards in NYC in the 90's. Now granted, he was old and his eyesight may not have been so great (he missed a lot of long shots) but even still he looked to be at that time...
