Don't get a soft tip. They tend to not hold their shape.

Most likely your cue shaft already has a pro taper. Most present day Palmers do. If you have a really hard tip you might want to change that. But to be honest some of the new Palmers already have a nice tip from the factory. Developing your stroke is what going to give you the cue ball control...

A heads up Mike This does seem to be the case only when using the Vbulletin skin. It works when using tech2 skin. I never used it before anyway but I just checked and the button is dead only in vbulletin
