My experience (and I now have Moori mediums on 6 of my cues) is that once initially shaped, a 'real' Moori stays that way, doesn't need scuffing, chalks just fine, and doesn't mushroom. I have ones that are worn down to 1/8 of an inch, brand new ones, and everything in-between and I never miscue...

Do what I did and video-tape the whole thing. It's like a felt replacement tutorial if I ever want to change anything myself...

I went through this with Thierry and he convinced me that the Layani joint really doesn't need protectors. The stainless steel half is, well, stainless steel... and the short pin and phenolic female part is also pretty well bullet proof. It would be pretty hard to bend it like a conventional...

Nevertheless, I once owned a cue by Sheldon Lebow that had absolutely wonderful rings on it made from malachite, ebony, and ivory. Nice contrast to the highly figured maple fore-arm... it can be done - you just need the good taste to use it in small doses...
