Thanks for the honest review! These tips will hit a little more firm than most Elkmasters. Most of the EM tips these days are spongy and tend to "pull apart" if you push up on them with your thumb. If you get a good solid EM it should feel similar to the Black King as far as hardness.

It's not actually a backing it is the same hardness as the other layers. We added the natural colored bottom layer because we don't want anyone ever mistaking a Black King Tip for any other tip on the market. It is sort of our signature or trademark.
