    APA Double Hit Madness

It amazes me how many people pull this out as if it's some sort of trump card. It may not be their intent, but to me it comes across as "I've been to Vegas, so I obviously know more than you." I've been to Vegas myself, and based on what I've seen out there, it's probably the LAST place I'd...

    APA Double Hit Madness

The APA manual says that only the player or the coach can officially call a foul. But if I'm understanding you correctly, since no neutral party was available to watch the shot, and theoretically both players and coaches from both sides disagree, and because in a disputed call, the shooter...

    APA Double Hit Madness

Fair point. Many places, I wouldn't have even had to call the foul, because most knowledgeable players wouldn't have tried the shot. But, I guess I was more interested in whether the APA considers it a foul, or if this is one of those look the other way situations like a miscue on the break...

    APA Double Hit Madness

There truly weren't any neutral parties in the bar. I wish there had been, but the only people in the place were players on the two teams. But, this might actually be a trump card for the other team. If the two teams can't agree on the call, then the call goes to the shooter, right?

    APA Double Hit Madness

Actually, the two most knowledgeable players on their team agreed with me. Only one of them argued that I couldn't call the foul though. The other one approached me after the match and apologized for his teammate's behavior.

    APA Double Hit Madness

Thanks for the reply Dave, but that's probably not very practical in a bar.

    APA Double Hit Madness

This one's for all you APAers out there. I'm having a bear of a time getting an answer on this one through the local leagues, so I thought I'd come here and see what you folks say. A shooter had ball in hand. He placed the cue ball into a tight spot roughly 2 inches away from the object ball...

    The secret to good pool...

There it is! The table is just another set of variables. You still have to make balls and you still have to beat your opponent. It's been said before, they're different games. People have their preferences, and there's nothing wrong with that. But, what surprises me is that more isn't made...

    8-ball "obvious" call shot ?

no worries. I just thought they'd changed the rule or something. I know by APA rules, balls knocked off the table are spotted, but don't result in a foul. That can actually make for a pretty awesome safety. I've seen it done by accident, but it ended up costing the person the match...

    8-ball "obvious" call shot ?

Haven't played a BCA league for a few years. Is this new? I thought that balls pocketed, legally or otherwise always remained down.

    8-ball "obvious" call shot ?

good point. I was trying to think of a scenario that would put two nearly identical shots together, but that was the best i could come up with. I guess my point was that I've seen people take liberties with that rule, and with terminology for that matter...always when they are losing...and...

    What to do?

Can the 9 be made with ball in hand? If not, then I think this is the way to go. If it can, then I'd play the cue ball up table. Either way, your job here is to prolong the game and make your opponent earn it. Although it's not recommended, I'd probably take a quick look to see if this was...

    8-ball "obvious" call shot ?

To answer the original question, your opponent would have had to raise his question before the shot. I think you did the right thing by offering to call all shots, because what's obvious to you could simply be different from what's obvious to your opponent. The only way to absolutely avoid...

    Run This (61)

That could very well be, and this is why I read these forums. Thanks for taking the time to follow through on the point. I had noticed what you're talking about with the side pockets, and I've started to look for those shots more often myself. It certainly helps to minimize cue ball movement...

    Back arm perpendicular- why?

Eh... no worries. Like I said, the physics is interesting to me, too. And I'm paying a whole lot less for these lessons than I paid to watch Ringo run around acting like a fool! It's strange to me, though. For as much as I hear about keeping your back arm perpendicular to the cue, the floor...

    Run This (61)

I see what you're saying, but that's exactly why I was going to do it right away. I still like my pattern though, and here's why. I've got the angle now, and with the 8, 4 and 13 so close to pockets, I have plenty of safety valves if I don't like the shot on the 10 or if I need to cinch it. I...

    Back arm perpendicular- why?

Ha ha... The physics is interesting to me, but it's all far above and beyond the basics that I understand. I suppose that's what you get when you take Physics 101 and your book for the course features a cartoon character named Ringo. Oddly enough, I got several more direct answers out of this...

To all the scientifically inclined folks...Does the grip hand position matter?

When the cue ball is against the rail, my bridge length is usually determined by how I need to place my hand to make my bridge as stable as possible, AND allow me to execute whatever shot I need. Are you guys saying you use a certain bridge length every time against the rail?

To all the scientifically inclined folks...Does the grip hand position matter?

Again, my purpose for starting this discussion wasn't to implement it into my own game. A discussion in another thread prompted me to wonder on a purely physical basis. To answer your question though, yes, I shorten my bridge for very soft shots-especially in tight quarters. I adjust my grip...

To all the scientifically inclined folks...Does the grip hand position matter?

Thank you! It took some doing, but we finally got there. Thanks everyone!
