To all the scientifically inclined folks...Does the grip hand position matter?

Thank you. I'm not actually curious about this as to how it would relate into my own game. I'm exploring a theory. For instance, do people with broader shoulders, and say, a longer cue have an inherent advantage, because they are able to naturally grip the cue farther back, and still use...

Pool Commentary with Ewa and Mitch Lawrence

Commentating for ESPN has to be incredibly hard. As a pool player, I'd much rather watch the Accu-Stats crews, but ESPN can't cater to only pool players or they'd loose their main audience completely. I almost wonder if a guy like Joe Rogan would be a better (certainly a more expensive)...

To all the scientifically inclined folks...Does the grip hand position matter?

Dan, your diagrams assume that the pivot point is fixed in space, like it would be for a normal human. As you say, they assume that the only thing changing is the grip hand position. Since that's exactly what I said in my earlier questions, I can understand why what I was trying to ask wasn't...

To all the scientifically inclined folks...Does the grip hand position matter?

Thanks again for the replies everyone. I'm still not sure I'm asking the question clearly, because we seem to be hung up on what is possible for a human vs. what is possible in theory. I truly appreciate the help, but I think maybe I'm going to have to find the answer somewhere else. Thanks!

To all the scientifically inclined folks...Does the grip hand position matter?

Aunty Dan. I appreciate you taking the time to post these replies, but I think maybe I'm still not being clear enough in the way I'm asking my question. This question is only one piece of the puzzle going on inside my head, so for right now, I'm truly only interested in knowing about the...

Jasmine Ouschane vs Thomas Engert and more

Thanks for sharing. Did anyone watch the Engert/Ouschan match? Thomas hit a hell of a kick shot on a 2 ball in either the second or third video.

    Back arm perpendicular- why?

Thanks. That makes sense to me.

To all the scientifically inclined folks...Does the grip hand position matter?

Thanks for the response, Dan. I suppose I should have been more specific in my question, because it's actually the physics that I'm asking about. Assuming that I can produce the exact same stroke no matter where I position my grip hand, will the precise placement of that grip hand change the...

To all the scientifically inclined folks...Does the grip hand position matter?

Can you explain why that is? If the entire cue is moving in the same direction of the stroke, and directly into the ball (simplified of course), then I'm having a hard time understanding why it matters where the grip hand touches the cue. Thanks!

    Back arm perpendicular- why?

Hi Bob. In a typical stroke, where would those two points fall? Or is that too loaded a question to answer in the context of this thread?

To all the scientifically inclined folks...Does the grip hand position matter?

The conversation in my last thread sparked this question for me. I thought it might warrant it's own topic. I've probably simplified the question too much but.... Assuming all other variables equal, does the precise position of the grip hand on the cue matter? In my head, I've always likened...

    Edge Break Cue

I've got a buddy who has one, and was nice enough to let me try it out for about a dozen breaks one night. It's a solid hitting cue for sure, and very effective. My major complaint with it is simply the comfort factor. The butt is tapered differently, where the taper on the end farthest...

    Back arm perpendicular- why?

Thanks for the thoughtful replies everyone, there are some great tidbits in here. I've long been a proponent of the importance of predictable results over raw ability, but obviously if I could combine the two, I'd like to do that. I'm not sure what I'll do in the end, but I appreciate the...

    Back arm perpendicular- why?

I actually used to think that was the case, but I've had a handful of cues over the past few years, and always the same result. Even with the countless bar cues that I've used. For me, it seems to be more about my body positioning than it does about the balance point. Thanks for the reply...

predator 314 vs Stock Joss Shaft

It always takes me time to adjust to a new tip. Before you spend the money on a new shaft, I'd give the new tip a little time. Once you've broken it in the way you like it, you might see more consistent results. That said, your friend (from the original post) might be giving you uninformed...

    Back arm perpendicular- why?

Here's my dilemma: I've been told by players much more accomplished than I that I should work on getting my back arm perpendicular at contact. Nearly every book, article, AZB post, etc. that discusses fundamentals seems to agree. When I play, my arm is usually forward of perpendicular at...

    Run This (61)

Here's what I'd like to do. I like the 3 better than the 1 as a break ball, because I feel like clearing the 1 out of the way is probably easier than the other way around. I definitely agree with you, Dennis on the direct hit vs. coming off the rail. Other than that, I just like shooting the...

    Run This (62)

I like this a lot. Haven't played much straight pool in the last couple months, but in the little I've played, I'm really starting to appreciate the way the balls spread when you can catch either of those top two balls in the stack.

    FS/FT: McDermott Arizona w/QR joint

Looking to sell or trade a fairly new McDermott Arizona. Stock shaft. 13mm triangle med/hard tip. I have two weight bolts for it, and I'll include both of them, so the cue can weigh 19oz (without the bolt), 19.5 oz. (aluminum bolt) or 20 oz (steel bolt). I also upgraded the joint to the...

    Another 8-ball Lovefest

Great story Fred. Thanks for sharing. Sometimes, they just don't roll your way. I'm a bit of a latecomer to the "lovefest" as you called it, but I would have been real tempted to call "safe" and play the 11 into the corner, rolling forward behind the 12 and 13. Then assuming a second ball in...
