New Room in San Francisco's Mission district called 'The Hall'

A family/group owned several pool halls in the Bay Area. I recently talked to someone who worked at the Berkeley and Fremont locations (both called Town and Country, I think). There were also rooms in Concord, San Mateo and the big one in San Francisco. He said the San Mateo room was renamed to...

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

The phrase is apparently a modern paraphrase. It slips off the tongue. What Hamilton apparently did say does not slip so well. The source of the paraphrase appears to be, in part: All communities divide themselves into the few and the many. The first are the rich and well born, the other the...

    2026 World Snooker Championship: April 18 - May 04

That's out of 32, for those not familiar with the format. Other Chinese players were eliminated in the qualifiers.

    Another Cueball Training Device/Product!!

I think the pros will be far more interested in learning how the real pockets work on the tournament tables. Reduced to 3 1/2?!?

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

You can ask the ref about what the frozen ball rule is. If he acts puzzled and confused that you could even ask about such a thing, good luck. Even if you play the thin hit, maybe he is playing by the Ultimate Pool rules and you have to shoot away, or by Derby City rules and you must jack up.

Another stupid thread from me: golf is harder than pool

The question I asked above is: For the players in the top 100 at each sport, how many hours did it take them to get into the top 100? That's maybe a little skewed because there are more people trying to get into the top 100 at golf, but that's part of the deal. That has a chance of finding an...

    Do I really NEED a $10k table?

I've never heard of that table maker before. What caused it to be that expensive when it was new? Solid rare hardwood?

    Another Cueball Training Device/Product!!

Just use two short pieces of dowel. Use a ball to judge how far to put them apart. You only knock over one of them for a bad shot, so it's clear which side you missed on. But I think it's much, much better to just play a straight-in follow shot. The path of the cue ball tells you how well you...

Yapp’s Controversial Tournament-Winning Shot in the 8-Ball World Championship … Was it a Foul?

Training referees is a hard job. In the particular case of The Pongers Push, the shot is rare and extreme, and it could easily have never been included explicitly in whatever training the referee received. It is one thing to know the words of the rule and a very different thing to see an extreme...

They seem to have completely updated the website. I just type "umb carom" into google and the link is the first item returned.

    Super Billiards Expo 2026

Strange comment. A different way to look at it is that all of their expenses were paid for the Mosconi Cup, so that should count as even more. It is a tournament even if it is an invitational/exhibition.

    2026 World Snooker Championship: April 18 - May 04

Which doesn't make much sense word-wise since Scandinavia is in the same continent as Italy and Germany. But then the UK is in Europe, too, if it is in any continent at all.

You don't understand how high-stakes pool gambling works. Both players win. The stakehorses are slaughtered for their meat. Sadly, in California, it's against the law to eat horses. Really. It nearly got into the state constitution.

    Super Billiards Expo 2026

I think it's reasonable to have a step of 2:1 between first and second prize but it should be more gradual after that. Maybe the WNT will eventually go to the snooker model and guarantee $25k minimum per year for all touring pros and no entry fees. Or like three cushion where travel/lodging...

    Anti-elbow drop machine

That's what some seem to ignore. For soft shots, up to three table length speed or so, many top players don’t drop the elbow significantly, even after contact. For fast shots, all top pros drop the elbow some, after contact. Often that is five inches or so. That's necessary to keep the arm...

    Super Billiards Expo 2026

Woodward won $95k in tournaments last year. Thorpe was about $70k. With sponsors and side gigs, that can work. There are three other Americans over $50k for 2025.

Are any of the parts inside the pocket part of the rail?

The WPA rules say, in part: "The cushions, tops of the rails, pockets and pocket liners are parts of the rails."
