What brand of tip is Alex referring to in this video?

TAR Podcast: Ep. 38 with Alex Pagulayan and Francisco Bustamante, at 56:45 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y2qoCtdiak#t=56m45s Called a "Zen" tip (?), synthetic & made in Japan?

Why aren't cue butts straight tapered?

Just curious--I like a slim handle, but many times I have to reach for shots, thus putting my grip around a thicker part of the butt. I find this to be the case with many cues. I'm assuming it's mostly for weight distribution/balance, right?

    LF: OB Cue reviews

I'm interested in the OB-122, the all black wrapless model with an OB Classic Pro, but I prefer a slimmer handle. Does anyone know how these cues feel? I had an entry level Schon (STL-1) and I really liked the dimensions then, but they don't make an all black, wrapless version. Thanks!

Sneaky or plain jane preferred. Old is good, so long as it isn't warped. Something simple, nothing fancy, just a good hit. Thanks!

FS: Predator Quiet Roller 2 QR-2, awesome birdseye, with Z2 shaft.

UPDATED: Predator Quiet Roller 2 QR-2, awesome birdseye, with Z2 shaft. Probably the best, most uniform birdseye I've ever seen in a production cue. Rolls straight, hits as good as they say (well, compared to the black QR-1), small ding in the forearm. Comes with a Z2 with a Kamui Black Soft...

What cases are you guys using?

I just got a billiard cue and want to leave the rubber grip on, but a lot of these butterfly cases have fabric sleeves. I only know of the Silver Fox cases to have nylon inserts, however the 4x8 combo is a little more than what I'm needing--they don't make the 3x3 anymore. What are you guys using?

Where can you buy the Mezz SP billiard grip in the US?

It has a product description on the international Mezz website, but not on mezzusa.com. Also it is not listed for sale in the inventory on websites for US distributors (e.g., JJ Cues, Cuestix). What gives? I really want the white one.

Youtube video of testing various cue tip hardnesses.

Are there any cuemakers that do this? Maybe this is old news, and I don't know why, but I thought this concept was fascinating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZYWy6NqHlw

How do the carom Tiger cues vary from their pool cue counterparts?

I'm in the market for a near budget billiard cue, and I was wondering if the Carom Tiger butt + carom shaft & radial Predator for pool would be a good value.? Entry level Tigers seem like a solid investment, even better if I can just buy a standard shaft for switching games. So are the butts...

Where do you get the "puffy" billiard grips?

I've seen a lot of the thin, rubber roll-on sleeves, but where can I find the grip (or of similar variety) the professionals use, as in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_LGneyBPbM&feature=related Is this a permanent installation, or can it be removed between games? I'm new to the...

Is it worth having a joint changed out of a brand new Predator Sneaky Pete?

I guess it's a bit of a loaded question, since I know that the majority of cuemakers have have such strong opinions on the Chinese mass-produced, supposed hollow hitting cues. But I have had a chance to shoot with one and it was a pretty positive experience. Anyhow, I'm asking because I once...

Tropical wood properties list - a luthier's perspective

Interesting read if you're out shopping for a custom cue: http://www.mangore.com/tropical-woods-properties.html Pretty cool knowing that if a piece of wood has a high treble frequency, it provides a harder hit, and vice versa. I know the shaft/tip/taper combo has the most to do with that, but...

What is the purpose, or origins, of making a piloted shaft & mating joint combo?

I'm curious as to why this construction design was implemented.

What are the pros & cons of having a shaft threaded with a phenolic insert?

I have a 3/8x10 (Judd style pin) cue and shaft that I want to convert to a Uni-loc Radial thread pitch. I've been told having a phenolic insert tapped creates a really firm hit. Can I get any feedback on this? Thanks!

How often do cuemakers make their own blanks for sneaky petes / hustlers?

I guess this might be old knowledge for most, but I just learned that many makers don't make their own butts for this style of cue. Many just buy Schmelke or Atlas ones. Not to suggest they don't play as well, but why is this? And how can they charge so much more for butts from $50-$100?

Why do we even use wood, leather, and chalk anyway?

Just throwing it out there-- With all this talk about radial consistency and lower front-end mass to decrease deflection, why aren't there carbon fiber or like equivalents made into shafts. I get the Cuetec thing with fiberglass, which is not to my liking either, but I'd like to think we've...

Can I get a quote on a plain jane, painted black wrapless butt (no shaft).

So after getting a big 'hell no' from a couple of cuemakers here, I'm openly asking for a quote at getting a butt made, radial pin, without a shaft. I have LD shafts that I play with, and am not needing anything special on that end. Maybe a metal beauty ring at the joint, black phenolic, but...
