Coronavirus: Boris Johnson says fans not allowed at sports pilot events as planned

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/53610375

Quote .

" Fans will not be allowed to attend the pilot sports events scheduled for this weekend in England after a spike in coronavirus cases, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said.

Spectators were due to watch the first two days of two county cricket matches, while 205 fans were at the start of the World Snooker Championship on Friday.

It was also hoped to allow 4,000 racegoers at Goodwood on Saturday.

The new restrictions on fans will be enforced until at least 15 August.

The announcement comes after general restrictions were reintroduced for people in parts of northern England.

"Pilots of larger crowds at sports venues will not take place," Johnson said at a news conference on Friday.

"I said from May we would not hesitate to put on the brakes at the slightest sign that the numbers were going in the wrong direction."

Johnson had said earlier this month that spectators could be able to return to stadiums in England from October.

The planned pilots - and reaction
Fans were already at the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield when the prime minister spoke on Friday, with announcer Rob Walker shouting "we are back" as play started, before adding: "Our socially distanced crowd are poised to roar once more."

World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn was shown smiling, clapping and fist-pumping, as spectators - some wearing masks - cheered on the first players Judd Trump and Tom Ford.

Just hours earlier, Hearn had told BBC of his "pride" and "relief" at getting fans back at events.

However, while those with tickets for Friday's further sessions were allowed to stay, there will now be no spectators permitted at the Crucible Theatre from Saturday. Fans with tickets will be given a refund, or be allowed to use them next year.

After the government decision, Hearn told BBC Sport he was "gutted" and "disappointed" to not have an atmosphere, but added: "The show must go on.

"There is a chance - I'm forever the optimist - that maybe a return for the final [on 16 August] is the earliest possible opportunity.

"Congratulations to those guys who went today because they will be able to talk about this for the rest of their lives - the ultimate golden ticket.

"I've never known a circumstance change in a couple of hours, but that is symbolic of what is happening in the world at the moment.

"We don't go off into a corner or go into sulks or tears, we get the job done."

England v West Indies at Old Trafford
Sport has been held behind closed doors since its return, including England's Test series against West Indies
Two matches in cricket's Bob Willis Trophy starting on Saturday had been due to welcome spectators - Surrey v Middlesex at the Oval and Warwickshire against Northamptonshire at Edgbaston.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said: "We understand the reasons the government has made this decision, and remain ready to work with them to ensure supporters can safely return to stadiums when government advice allows.

"We are pleased the Bob Willis Trophy will still begin this weekend behind closed doors, and fans will be able to watch their teams in action through the online streams being provided."

The Oval had been due to host 2,500 fans on Saturday and Sunday, having held the first pilot last weekend of 1,000 fans.

Surrey chief executive Richard Gould said: "A lot of hard work has taken place to ensure that members and fans could return to our ground safely.

"We still hope to welcome members to the ground for future matches this summer, and we will continue to work with the ECB and the government to encourage this to happen."

A statement from Goodwood racecourse said: "We are very disappointed for those who were hoping to attend tomorrow's event and for all those who have worked so hard to make it possible for spectators to be present.

"We will engage with public health authorities and the DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) over a rescheduled pilot at the earliest opportunity."

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden posted on social media that it was "very disappointing news".

"I know the huge efforts cricket, snooker and horseracing have made to welcome fans back. We'll keep working together on their safe return ASAP," he added.

Analysis
BBC sports editor Dan Roan

This will be hugely disappointing news for the events involved, and obviously very worrying for the wider sports industry, which is increasingly desperate to get paying fans back through the turnstiles to ease an unprecedented financial crisis - especially for those sports bodies dependent on matchday revenue, like English Football League clubs.

Until now, the effort to get sports back up and running after lockdown had gone relatively smoothly, with the football season resuming and now almost completed, along with other events such as Test cricket, Formula 1 and horse racing.

This then is a first major setback in the wider effort to return sport to some kind of normality.

However, crucially, I am told by Whitehall sources that the government remains keen to work with sports and Public Health England with a view to getting fans back inside venues from 1 October.

Some sports organisations - like the Premier League - would like to see that target date brought forward, but Friday's news will not have helped them win that argument.

Attendances of 20% to 40% capacity - depending on the nature of the venue - is envisaged by officials from October, and more pilots are being planned in the coming weeks.

It is simply too early to tell whether this is now unrealistic. It remains the aim but there are no guarantees.

This is a stark reminder that the nature of the pandemic means it is difficult to plan months in advance, and that officials will need to take decisive action when data shows worrying trends."

World Snooker Championship Schedule: Day 1
July 30, 2020
The 2020 World Snooker Championship got under way on Friday with about 300 supporters inside the Crucible Theatre.
UK prime minister Boris Johnson has announced that the test programme reintroducing fans to sporting venues will be suspended – abruptly ending Crucible fans at the World Championship.

With coronavirus cases rising again and other areas of England going into local lockdown, the decision has been made to curtail the pilot scheme.

Crucible fans were at the venue this morning for the first match of the delayed 2020 World Snooker Championship in Sheffield.

Defending champion Judd Trump entered the arena to applause from the 300 or so supporters, but the remainder of the tournament from Saturday will be contested behind closed doors.

On the eve of the competition, qualifier Anthony Hamilton withdrew citing fears over his health as a result of fans being allowed at the venue.

“Pilots of larger crowds at sports venues will not take place,” Johnson said at a news conference on Friday.

“I said from May we would not hesitate to put on the brakes at the slightest sign that the numbers were going in the wrong direction.”

WST remains hopeful that a small crowd will be allowed for the final on August 15 and 16, and it will follow Government advice on this.

Fans who had tickets for the Crucible will be offered the chance to transfer them to the 2021 event, or will be offered a full refund.

WST Chairman Barry Hearn said: “We realise this will be a huge disappointment for fans who were excited to witness the magic of the Crucible over the next fortnight, and we feel the same ourselves.”

“At every stage of this process we have been following Government guidelines and working with them on the correct procedures.”

“We have had very positive feedback from the Government, they have been impressed by the measures we have implemented.

“Safety has always been our number one priority and we have met every aspect of the Government guidelines in this regard.

“Above all it’s a great shame for people who had those golden tickets, but in the circumstances we are now living in we have to accept the decision and move on.

“Snooker has led the way in terms of the return of live sport, in recent weeks we have been the first to stage live televised events and now live events with a small crowd.

“In the months to come we will continue to find innovative ways to bring sport back safely and entertain our many millions of fans around the globe.”

Fans who have tickets will be contacted soon by the tickets providers to explain how to transfer to next year or receive a refund."

With just a click of their fingers and thumbs they can shut everything down all over again but it never ended in the first place did it ?

Judd Trump left frustrated in 'ludicrous' ball-placement farce at World Snooker Champ

https://www.eurosport.co.uk/snooker...d-snooker-championship_sto7821925/story.shtml

Quote .

" Judd Trump was left frustrated as the referee and an assistant official spent nearly five minutes deciding where to place the balls after a foul at the World Snooker Championship.

There was a bizarre extended hold-up after Trump failed to escape from a safety by his opponent, Tom Ford, and committed a foul on the pink while leading 54-17 in the frame and trailing 5-4 in the match.

World Snooker Championship: Judd Trump hits 100th century of season in Crucible

World Snooker Championship hit by Boris Johnson backtrack on fans
The referee, German Marcel Eckardt, and his assistant marker, Ben Williams, who was watching a freeze frame, proceeded to have a real struggle establishing where the balls should be placed after the mistake.

An agonising wait of nearly five minutes ensued as both Trump and Ford watched on perplexed and frustrated, while Eurosport commentator Neal Foulds made his agitation known.

"Listen, you don't want to start me off on how this isn't the way to do it, surely," Foulds said on Eurosport commentary.

I mean, it's ludicrous that this is having to go on with a marker and a referee. This is like something from about 30 years ago, isn't it?

"There are other ways of working out where the balls are. It's nonsense!

"This is an example of how to make something that could be sorted out in 20 seconds, last five minutes.

"Come on guys, get on with it! I think we should just be playing."

Trump looked visibly frustrated by the exchange and repeatedly muttered: "No. It's not right, I don't think it's right."

Thankfully, when the officials finally did get there with the ball placements, Trump found the red he needed at the second attempt to ensure everyone did not have to go through the whole thing again.

Hi Bob !

It's about that overhead camera that can follow the exact position of each ball without the referee walking over to a dude behind a TV screen saying up a bit , down a bit , a little to the top , bottom , left or right .

Have your boffins got it fixed yet Bob ?

I will make a millionaire out of you someday Bob !:thumbup:

As far as ball replacement, if the have EagleEye they ought to be able to say exactly where the balls were and how they are now and exactly how far the ball has to move. The ref ought to have an A/B picture on his smarty-phone.

Da Bookie !

you made a tournament winner bet, church?

weird year, i'm kind of clueless. i figured ding to be a reasonable outsider given his capability and maybe feeling less pressure this year. haven't placed a bet yet

Hi skogstokig;6712955 !

The local Scotbet Bookie shut down on the Friday of last year British Open Golf that Shane Lowry won and it took maybe six weeks or more to collect that bet .

There was a bet on just when last year World Championships ended and it was on who most impressed and it was Theyachaiya Un-Nooh @ 150/1 but that bet was placed on my son's online account at the time but he since shut that account down lol !

I've not stepped foot into a Betting shop for a long time and when everything shut down due to Corona Virus , well they stopped me going back anyway lol !

I miss it all especially the characters you meet and the stories told and the mad dash to place bets just before the off etc .

I will be tuning into Ronnie O'Sullivan V Theyachaiya Un -Nooh match but the bet was placed so long ago it's hardly worth bothering about lol !

Hi Bob !

As far as ball replacement, if the have EagleEye they ought to be able to say exactly where the balls were and how they are now and exactly how far the ball has to move. The ref ought to have an A/B picture on his smarty-phone.

Snooker referee calls on VAR to check the what order the balls touched :

https://www.eurosport.co.uk/snooker...rder-the-balls-touched_vid1331541/video.shtml

The VAR system began in the EPL and was meant to end all controversial decision and the pundits agreed but it had the opposite effect really .

" Ronnie O'Sullivan v Thepchaiya Un-Nooh
SUNDAY AUGUST 2 (1430 GMT) & MONDAY AUGUST 3 (1000 GMT)
TV Coverage: BBC & Eurosport
World Championship draw and schedule
Without question the tie of the round and the sort of match which, should it deliver what it promises, could make anyone fall in love with this sport.

O'Sullivan says Un-Nooh is one of those players he doesn't mind losing to and whether you believe him or not, there's a reason for it: the Thai plays the game like O'Sullivan himself, gliding round the table and wasting not one second over a shot.

The results can be spectacular - see that infamous missed 147 attempt and his Shoot Out success - and there was much to like about the way he qualified, including two centuries and a further five frame-winning breaks against the capable Liam Highfield earlier this week.

The trouble is he does need those single-visit contributions to win frames and indeed matches, which is why for all his talent I'm not sure anyone sees him as a world champion in the making.

Still, it's been a largely excellent year and there's certainly a risk factor here for Ronnie, who has started to show signs that he's slowing down. Indeed, much here will depend on whether playing Thepchaiya brings out his best or his worst; his safety game is his big advantage, perversely, and just how serious he is about winning may well be revealed before the mid-session interval - not just the match, but the tournament itself.

My colleague Chris Hammer makes the case for this to be the first-round match which produces the most centuries, and that's a route many will go down. I, however, have come to the conclusion, largely on instinct, that O'Sullivan will be primed to send a message, especially if the absence of spectators does make him feel more at ease.

Thepchaiya has played well in both first-round exits at the Crucible - indeed he was dreadfully unlucky not to beat Trump last April in a defeat which changed the course of snooker history - but my suspicion is he could be in for a hiding.

There's not a great deal to base it on, so the message is hold your bets, and instead focus on the essence of this game: it will be played at pace, with grace, and is sure to deliver something spectacular one way or another.

Prediction: O'Sullivan 10-3 Un-Nooh "

The Sporting Life's Richard 'Tricky Dicky' Mann doesn't give Thepchaiya Un-Nooh much of a chance but we shall soon see how this match will play out !:wink::grin:
