I worked on Exam II this past weekend and managed to improve my best Exam II score from a 69 to a 72. I could probably do even better with some more practice, but I think I'm done for a while. My best Exam I score to date is 88, and my best Exam II score (limited to Masters level, since I am on an 8' table) is 72. That gives me a best total score to date of 160 (88 + 72). I'm pretty happy with that for now. My next goal will be to get a Doctorate-level score on a 9' table (maybe next summer). I would also like to see how high I can score on a Valley/Dynamo bar box (also limited to the Masters-level Exam II).

If you want to see my latest Exam II, here it is: Dr. Dave's best Exam II run to date.

I can hear the detractors already, once they see the list below. They will say: "There is no way you are a A++/AAA player (based on the BU rating) or an A+ player (based on the 10-ball ghost drill)." Concerning the BU rating, they would be right. I definitely don't play like a AAA player. However, remember that these are the best runs at the exams I have been able to accomplish over a many-month period. Also, I'm playing on an 8' table with fairly generous pockets. Now, if a person were to get a score of 160 on a 9' table with tight pockets on a regular basis (which I for one can't do), then the A++/AAA/semi-pro rating would probably be appropriate.

Here's the latest list:

Dr Dave, congrats on your high score.

For the people who submitted several scores, It would be interesting to see a graph of the trial number versus their score. I would hypothesize if someone were to do it several times, the first few attempts would increase rapidly. Then, the scores may begin to increase slower, and eventually plateau around a tighter range.

If that hypotheses had data to support it, I wonder if a shifting of the ratings/diplomas would be warranted. I would shift things such that a person's "best" score after multiple attempts would be their final score. That takes care of the case where a really good player on his first attempt scores lower than a weaker player after multiple attempts. It would give the really good player motivation to keep at it. Just food for thought, now that we have more data and more people that have tried the test multiple times.

I plan to continue again, but I'm addicted in straight pool land trying to run 50. I'm at 27 thus far...

Good job Dave! No...GREAT job! For those that don't know, highest score on exam 1 is 100. Highest one can get on exam 2 Masters level is 77. So, Dave ALMOST nailed a perfect score on the Masters exam!

Dr Dave, congrats on your high score.
Thanks! My hard work has definitely made a difference in both my confidence and level of play.

For the people who submitted several scores, It would be interesting to see a graph of the trial number versus their score. I would hypothesize if someone were to do it several times, the first few attempts would increase rapidly. Then, the scores may begin to increase slower, and eventually plateau around a tighter range.
Good idea. If you click on the different video links and take note of the video submittal dates for the people who have posted often, you can associate scores with dates. Plot away.

Maybe I'll do this at some point also after we have a lot more data.

Interesting idea. I think (but I'm not sure) I like the rating system the way it is now for general use. The important thing is to put scores, ratings, and diplomas into proper perspective. For example, if somebody just posts their best scores after many attempts at both exams over many months, that should be interpreted differently than somebody who spends a few days practicing all of the drills and then does one or two full runs at both exams. That score would probably be more representative of their true level of play. I suspect the well-practiced (but not exhaustive multiple trials over many months) scenario will be more typical, except for the people that might be striving for a diploma. Maybe we should increase the score cutoffs for the diploma levels. That might make more sense overall.

Anyway, I like your idea, and I will think about it some more and maybe discuss it with the BU professors the next time I seek their input.

I plan to continue again, but I'm addicted in straight pool land trying to run 50. I'm at 27 thus far...
Keep up the good work. I hope you can reach the 50 soon. I also look forward to seeing how much you can improve your BU score over time so we can create an "improvement plot" as you have suggested.

Catch you later,
Dave

Thanks Neil. I appreciate it.

That is a goal on mine ... to eventually get a perfect score on the Masters version of Exam II on my 8' table at home. As you probably well know, this will require a lot of focus and maybe a little luck. I certainly expect some perfect scores on Exam II (at both the Masters and Doctorate levels) from some top players out their. If it seems in reach for me, it should be a piece of cake for a top player.

On the other hand, I don't expect to see a perfect score on Exam I any time soon, even on an easy bar box. As you and others who have tried the exams well know, it is very difficult to be perfect for an entire exam run through, especially on the wagon-wheel drill which requires amazing CB control and consistency. The draw and stun shot drills can also be difficult to nail with perfection every time (although, a slick cloth can help a lot).

I'm actually more proud of my current best Exam I score (88/100) than my current best Masters-version Exam II score (72/77), even though I missed 5 of the shots in the potting drill (... shameful). I don't think I've every missed that many shots on that drill in any previous attempt. (But I made up for it with my best performance ever on the wagon-wheel drill. I also got a perfect score on the stun-shot drill, which I don't get as often as I would like.).

I look forward to seeing how much you can improve your scores. I'm confident you can do much better on both exams, even though that bar box of yours is vicious.

Catch you later,
Dave

yes, great shooting, indeed.

Just curious,do you play snooker? If so, what's your highest break and how well can you do at this generally?

Regards.

Sorry, but I do not play snooker; although, I do have tremendous respect for the game since I did play once when I had the opportunity. It was certainly a humbling experience.

Anybody plan to work on the free BU Exams this weekend (either to post a score for the first time or to challenge yourself to post an improved score)?

The dedicated and focused practice can help you improve your game.

The exam scores and rating will also help you get a realistic measure of your level of play and help you identify some of your weaknesses.

Here's the latest:

Meh.....60 on masters exam II or 129 total between the two...I guess not too bad for a retired pool player of about 3 years now.

Hey Dave, I'll look at the table info here eventually and try to remember to post it along with the 10 ball ghostball results. When I say retired it is sort of a joke as I am 34 and have stopped playing for about the last 3 years i.e. league, tournaments, gambling for the most part due to health problems, lack of fun in league, life stuff etc...I have a bunch of people say to play hard as I have the "potential" but I'm a realist with life so I have a pretty good eye on what that "potential" probably could be...just your standard APA 7 8 ball player that enjoys pool for fun...probably too much fun limiting improving, but that's ok for me at least as of now. I get yelled at occasionally for not giving it my all lol.

Sounds good. Thanks for the info concerning your "retirement."

Anyone else working on these drills?

Not directly. The tests showed that I have to work on controlling draw shots and position play. I have been working on those things, sometimes doing the BU/progressive drills, other times making up my own drills.

After a couple league nights I've noticed some other problems in my game and have been working on those as well.

The next time you feel like practicing, please try the entire BU set (Exam I and Exam II) and post your scores (and videos if possible). We are hoping more people will post scores both after an early attempt and after months of practice so we can see how much people can increase their scores over time.

Thanks,
Dave

Anyone else working on these drills?
Neil,

Thank you for reminding people. Many people in this and other threads have suggested they would do the exams but still haven't posted scores yet. I still hope these people will eventually try the complete exams and post scores (with or without video). I also hope they will post scores again in the future, after they have had more time to practice and improve their scores.

Do you still plan to attempt to top your previous best scores. I'm sure you are capable of this, assuming you can find the time.

Catch you later,
Dave

I plan to continue again, but I'm addicted in straight pool land trying to run 50. I'm at 27 thus far...
What's the latest with your straight pool run at 50?

With all of that practice, I look forward to seeing a much higher BU score from you in the near future.

Good luck,
Dave

Dr. Dave:

I noticed your BU score has you rated at semi-pro. Would you be willing to record some uneditted 14.1 run attempts or a 9b ghost race? It'd be interesting to see how accurate your rating system is.

As I mentioned at the beginning on this BU thing, people become proficient at the TEST, not playing ability.

Dave, if you really want to see how accurate it is, why don't you try it yourself? And, yes, we do become more proficient at the test. But, if you think that doesn't translate to becoming more proficient at playing the game, you would be very wrong. By the way, the test also includes playing the 10 ball ghost in it.
