Here are some stats from the double- and single-elimination portions of the 2018 World 14.1 Tournament played August 16-19 at The Spot Billiards Cafe and Lounge in Nanuet, NY. Pay-per-view streaming was provided by AzBtv. Thorsten Hohmann defeated Tony Robles in the final match to win his 5th title in this event.

For similar information on the streamed matches in the round-robin portion of the event, see this thread: https://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=479217

The conditions for this event include:
- 9-foot Connelly table with generous pockets and blue Z9 BilliardCloth;
- Aramith balls;
- triangle rack;
- foul on all balls;
- Rack your own in most matches;
- lag for opening break.

Attempted Scoring Innings means the player's total number of innings for the game minus the number of innings that he played only a safety or an intentional foul (no attempt to score a point).

PPI is Points per Inning based on the total number of innings in the game for that player. [Note: I am calling this measure Points per Inning rather than Balls per Inning to be a bit more precise in the definition, since the number of points a player is credited with in a game can be quite different from the number of balls he pocketed.]

PPASI is Points per Attempted Scoring Inning, i.e., points per inning based on the number of Attempted Scoring Innings in the game for that player.

The stats are for 13 matches -- 12 played on the Connelly table and one (Match #7 below) on a Diamond table. These 13 matches were 42% of the total of 31 matches played in those two portions of the event. The streamed matches are listed here in the order in which they were played. Matches numbered 1-4 were in the double-elimination stage on Thursday Aug. 16, and were played to 150 points. Matches 5-12 were in the single-elimination stage on Friday and Saturday Aug. 17-18, and were played to 200 points. Match 13, the final match, was played on Sunday Aug. 19 to 300 points. All information is given first for the match winner and then for the match loser (separated by a comma).

Impressive finals performance by Thorsten 300-138. A high run of 130 and only 12 scoring attempt innings in a race to 300, means his average ball run was 25. 7 of those runs ended in a miss (only 7 misses) and 4 ended with a safety. The final run got him out. Only surprising stat for Thorsten was his 3 unintentional fouls compared to Tony's 2.

Sounds like Tony didn't play too shabby, with only 7 misses in 10 scoring attempts innings, which means an average run of nearly 14 balls, not counting innings in which only a safety was played.

Thorsten Hohmann defeated Tony Robles 300 - 138 in the final match of the 2018 World 14.1 event this afternoon. Here is how the game went, inning by inning.

Scores in brackets are for Hohmann (H) first (since he shot the opening break), then Robles (R), and are shown as of the end of a player's inning if the score changed in that inning. References to "left" and "right" sides of the table are as the player looks from the head of the table to the foot.

H1 (Hohmann's inning #1) -- opening safety break from left side, leaving the 1-ball out and the cue ball a couple inches off the head rail.
R1 -- safe

H2 -- missed the 5-ball on the corner of the rack to the right side pocket.
R2 -- ran 3 and played safe. [0 - 3]

H3 -- safe; H4 -- safe; H5 -- safe.
R3 -- safe; R4 -- safe; R5 -- safe but left the 14-ball available for the left head pocket.

H6 -- ran 15, then, with the cue ball on the foot rail, missed the 12-ball to the left head pocket. [15 - 3]
R6 -- safe

H7 -- foul, hit no rail attempting to drive a 3-ball/1-ball combo to the head rail. [14 - 3]
R7 -- safe, a beauty, leaving Hohmann with essentially nothing with balls all over the table.

H8 -- missed a long, extreme backcut on the 11-ball to the left head pocket. The 11-ball was headed in but was intercepted by the cue ball off 2 rails.
R8 -- ran 38, then missed the break shot on the 12-ball, which was high to the left of the stack. [14 - 41]

H9 -- ran 45, then fouled on a pocket scratch trying to open the stack some more. [58 - 41]
R9 -- ran 8, then missed the 10-ball to the left foot pocket. [58 - 49]

H10 -- ran 4, but failed to open the pack and played safe. [62 - 49]
R10 -- safe

H11 -- safe; H12 -- safe; H13 -- safe; H14 -- intentional foul. [61 - 49]
R11 -- safe; R12 -- safe; R13 -- safe; R14 -- intentional foul. [61 - 48]

H15 -- safe, but the 7-ball was out.
R15 -- missed a long shot on the 7-ball to the right of the stack with the cue ball just off the head rail.

H16 -- ran 6, then missed an 8-ball/15-ball combo near the foot rail. [67 - 48]
R16 -- ran 4, then fouled by bouncing the cue ball off the table after making a swerve shot on the 7-ball in the right foot pocket. [67 - 51]

H17 -- ran 130, then missed a fairly short, easy combo on the 3-ball along the foot rail. The 3-ball bobbled and hung up. [197 - 51]

--- intermission ---

R17 -- ran 15, then fouled on a pocket scratch in the left foot pocket going 3 rails to hit the rack. He just grazed the rack and scratched. [197 - 65]

H18 -- intentional foul with BIH, sending the cue ball back to the head of the table. [196 - 65]
R18 -- safe into the top of the pile, hanging the 5-ball in the right foot pocket.

H19 -- foul on a pocket scratch in the left head pocket, trying to play a combo from the pack into the hanging 5-ball. [195 - 65]
R19 -- ran 40, then missed the 15-ball break shot to the left foot pocket. [195 - 105]

H20 -- ran 30, then played safe. [225 - 105]
R20 -- intentional foul [225 - 104]

H21 -- intentional foul [224 - 104]
R21 -- intentional foul [224 - 103]

H22 -- intentional foul [223 - 103]
R22 -- intentional foul, his 3rd consecutive foul. Robles rebroke from the right, leaving a tough 14-ball out to the left of the rack. [223 - 87]

H23 -- safe
R23 -- ran 1, then missed the 14-ball to the left of the pile. [223 - 88]

H24 -- ran 13, then, with cue ball mid table, missed the 6-ball break shot to the left side pocket, going 1 rail into the pile with the cue ball. [236 - 88]
R24 -- ran 9, then missed the 7-ball to the right foot pocket. [236 - 97]

H25 -- ran 63, then, with cue ball on the foot rail, missed a long shot on the 4-ball to the right head pocket. [299 - 97]
R25 -- ran 41, then, with the cue ball behind the rack and the 10-ball to the right of the rack, missed the 10-ball to the left head pocket trying to go 2 or 3 rails back to the other side of the rack for position on a break ball. [299 - 138]

H26 -- ran 1 and out. [300 - 138]

I had the PPV, checked AZB, the promoters website and Facebook but for whatever reason finding up to date information on this tournament was frustrating.

Looks like Thorsten had the high run of the tournament with 158 and next Shane with 138?

Thank you @AtLarge for for taking the time to put this info together again!

Thanks.

Hohmann's high was 150 & out in a 200-point game against Petri Makkonen on Saturday, surpassing Van Boening's 138 & out in a 150-point game against Ben Judge on Thursday.

100-point runs in this event were scarce. I know of only 4 in the 106 matches -- the two mentioned above plus Schmidt's 101 & out in a 100-point game on Monday and Hohmann's 130 in the 300-point Finals.

(Immonen was close on Tuesday with 99 & out vs. John Durr.)

I think it was a cloth that made 100+ runs so rare. Makkonen said tables were ultra fast. I noticed you said cloth was something I don´t know.
Maybe there is reason that pros that are so used to Simonis 860 struggled..

It was Z9 BilliardCloth, an 80/20 wool/nylon blend made in Germany. You've never seen it in Europe?

Yup. Never. Simonis almost always. I seen Gorina somewhere. Some bars have some really bad cloths but 95% of time everybody have Simonis.

Z9 is THE best cloth I have ever played on, I have the best control of cueball on Z9 even when it is new ;) The spin grabs better on Z9 than on Simonis 860, especially on rails. My guess would be that if pros were saying it played too fast the cloth was overstretched during installation. Or maybe temperature in the room was too high/humidity too low???

I love 14.1 - it's 99% of what I play these days - but a match to 300 is too much for a tournament finals.

I give Hohmann high kudos for his performance in this event. He beat all 9 guys they put in front of him in Nanuet pretty handily.

He has been jumping up on shots quite a bit in pressure situations in recent years. The most recent example of that was just 4 days before the 14.1 event started. He was playing Jayson Shaw in a quarterfinal match at Appleton's 8-Ball event in Bucharest. Hohmann did some terrific playing during the match, breaking and running out 8 times on 12 breaks. But, near the end he started jumping up on some shots, and the match went to a shootout at hill/hill. In the shootout he jumped up on all 3 of his attempts and missed them all badly.

I didn't notice any of that in his streamed 14.1 matches this past week. It looks like he is skipping Turning Stone this week, but I hope he stays in good form wherever his next event is. I imagine we'll see him again in 14.1 in October at the American Straight Pool Championship, and I imagine the field will be stronger for that event than it was in Nanuet.
