Tough qualification . Lots of notables and monsters in international qualifiers
128 players divided into 8 groups of 16
Winner of each group qualifies for main event
All matches Single elimination so each player has to win 4 consecutive matches to qualify
Each player has 2 chances . If they do not qualify today, they get last chance tomorrow

Notables in qualifiers :
Chris Meiling
Daryl Peach
Chang Yu Lung
Jayson Shaw
Chang Jung Lin
Fu Che Wei
Lee Van
Mika
Yang
Oi
Thorsten
Aloysius Yapp

Qualifier brackets in middle of page

IMHO, most of the international players are mostly rotation players and have little chance of getting deep in this tournament . The international players who will perform well are those with E8B or snooker background like defending champ Darren, Jayson, Chris Meiling , Gareth Potts :D

Final 64 for Main Event from 17-20 March2016

Final 64 players who will play in main event starting 17 -20 March
33 automatically go into main event based on their association rankings. Remaining 31 are winners of qualifiers
Very strong field littered with stars from the cue sports disciplines of WPA (mainly American pool 9B/10B/8B), Chinese 8 Ball (C8B), English 8 Ball (E8B) and snooker. This is an exciting and interesting matchup and clash of 4 different styles.
This year has a much bigger representation from WPA with about 2 dozen compared to only a handful from last year.
Notable absentees in main event are top favorites Gareth Potts, Mark Selby (last year's finalist). Too bad Ronnie O not taking part but Ding will be big crowd puller.

Though I think the C8B, E8B and snooker guys will have edge over the WPA guys, I am rooting for the WPA players that I am more familiar with and some snooker players. You can say last year's winner Darren Appleton is a WPA guy even though his background was in E8B

Top 8 WPA rankings
Ko Pin Yi
Liu Haitao
Kevin Cheng
Darren Appleton
Ko Ping Chung
Carlo Biado
Wu
John Morra

Top 8 Snooker (WPBSA) Rankings

Neil Robertson
Barry Hawkins
Judd Trump
Michael White

Chinese 8 Ball (CBSA) Rankings
Chu Bingjie

Zhang GuangHao
Shi HanQing
Li Bo

Zhang Lei
Liu Yang
Liu Chang
Li Ziseng
Song Binhui
Sun Yangyang

China National team (WPA regulations players)
Li Hewen
Wang Can
Dang Jinhu
Han Haoxiang

Did you watch that match, spartan? Was it close? Did Jayson keep his cool?

Long way to go to not get to play in the main tournament.

I really enjoyed this event last year. The addition of the snooker players makes for intriguing match ups. It was really interesting to see most of the snooker stars struggle, but Neil Robertson and Mark Selby do very well. Oddly, I wonder why Selby chose not to have another go. A good chance for three world titles in three disciplines.

No, did not watch
Jayson lost 4-7 in 2nd chance qualification final v Lee Van
In 1st chance qualification, he lost 1st match to Japanese player so his overall record 2-2 (excluding a buy he received)
Very tough qualification fields
Probably the best C8B player in China is Yang Fan. In the domestic qualifiers, he was blanked out in 1st chance qualification match 0-7 . Then in 2nd chance qualificationwon semi match hill hill, got into final and won hill hill.
But since domestic qualifiers only allot 15 slots instead of 16 slots, 2 qualifier winners have to play another playoff match. And Yang had to play the playoff match and won hill hill to get into main event :D

Was Shane invited ?
If so, why didn't he fly from Kuwait to China for this?
Tough to break even or make some money.
I believe based on last years WPA rankings Shane was not in top 8 so he would have to play tough qualifiers. Even if he qualifies for main event of 64 players, he would have to finish in top 16 to earn some money after expenses. Tough equipment, tough field.:D

After reading his blog entry from last month, I see that he's not playing. Not knowing much about the international competitions, I can't make heads or tails out of why he's not playing?

Phenomenal shooter though- sad to see he won't be there.

That link you gave is old information. Potts' IPA World Championship was in January of 2014.

Bad attitude by Jayson. He posted on FB whining about playing an opponent in an isolated room with no audience, he said he lost because his opponent didn't have any pressure playing without the audience, I paraphrase "the guy would never run out in front of an audience".
Kind of unbelievable to me, lost some respect to him. What a d*ckhead !

Potts didn't play in the World Championship last year either. I believe it was due to the fact that he is sponsored by Joy, which hosts the other big Chinese 8-ball tournament, the Chinese 8-Ball Masters.
