What things have you done to really improve your pool game?

When I posted earlier, I was a bit vague in my answer. After reading some of the other responses and then thinking some more about my own game, I have figured out a few things.
First of all, I moved forward on my cue, shortening my bridge giving my better control of my stroke.
Then I broadened my horizons... I was strictly a 9 foot table 1 pocket player. I was scared of rotation pool because I couldn't get out. I started practicing and playing 9 ball and 10 ball on a barbox. I quit relying on an aiming system for every shot. Now I just seem to know if I'm lined up right and if I'm going to miss or make the shot. I started using a preshot routine for every shot and visualizing every shot before I get down to shoot. Now, the only time I revert to the aiming system is on very difficult shots.
I stopped trying to play perfect position and started playing better angles. This eventually led to better position. Adopting this strategy allowed me to get out way more often.
The biggest thing I did was change my attitude. I quit griping about bad rolls and took credit for my mistakes. I realized that in reality, there are very, very few bad rolls. What most players call a bad roll is merely the result of bad execution or decision making. This change of attitude led to me finding my heart and passion for the game which I had lost many years ago. Getting that passion back gave me the drive and motivation to improve my game from maybe a "D" to maybe a "B" and still improving. I still make plenty of mistakes and have a little trouble with CB control when switching from big to small tables or vice-versa. Those are the things I am currently working to fix.
I still love to play 1 pocket on 9 footers, but I am no longer limited to "the old man's game." I'm really enjoying pool in general these days. Playing the best I've ever played probably has something to do with that, lol!

Now, I like this post. You did a lot to improve your game and your love of pool period! Keep up the good work on your pool game. Remember the better you play the less you lose.
Many Regards,

Yes, it's kinda funny. Alot of the guys that used to jump on me to play as soon as I walked in the door turn me down now when I ask them to play. I'm not saying I can't get action, I still get plenty. Now it's just with players who, not so long ago, were giving up the 7 and the break to me. Now we are playing even. I'm also giving up weight to players I would have never dreamed I'd have to spot! I still have alot of work to do and I'm certainly not getting any younger. My goal is to cash in at least one event at the DCC (if I get to go). I have to say, I'm enjoying the game more than I ever have right now!

It is amazing how changing the attitude and mental approach have improved my game also. I kind of start all over again from my tactics and game style also. and really got significant improvement lately.

I felt I was strong enough to enter amateur tournaments. In Vietnam there is no ranking system, no handicap tournaments, so who are not listed in the national team (about 15-20 pro players or so) are amateurs, which is quite unfair, but I just thought of how to get as many games as possible in the tournaments.

Surprisingly, I got into last 16 and last 8 in my 2 tournaments. in both tourneys, I started shaky coz I was inexperienced, but then played better and better. and I could beat guys who I watched admirably before. which is a great fun and I can also say I am enjoying the game more than ever now.

never stop playing:rolleyes:, change your game, practice straight pool (this help a lottt) stay away from 9 ball, sit down, patient watching better guy play, learn and take note from their stroke. when i lost confidence, i always play this game based the score on bowling type, you got 10 balls and 2 shots to clear up table, if you run out, you got 20 points, if you clear in 2 shots, you got clear (10 points), max round is 10, try to get above 170 each time you play and I swear to god it helps you a lot, not only recover your confidence but improve ur stroke 2.

9 ball game has all shots you need for practice and position play, straight pool is ok for learning how to break a cluster, often time you only shoot easy shots in straight pool due to many choices available, not many long shots or large cuts, yes key ball position is critical, but in 9 ball every ball is key ball.

Clearly going over the fundamentals till they are 2nd nature to you. The pre-shot routine should be a reflex you practice it so much. The fundies are the foundation of every shot taken.

Does every pool hall have one of these ?

Gamble! Cause when you lose your rent money....you wont make that mistake again! Or you'll be living on the street!!!

Funny, there is one at the local P/H who doesn't seem to pick up on this concept!

Drill Baby Drill

It would be great if we could all do drills and we enjoyed them. Fact is, it would be great if we enjoyed drills and completed 200 identical shots successfully. But even a brief 10 ball drill will do wonders for anyone, specially the super greenies.

For me it was to slow down just a touch and do the following...

Look at the EXACT position I'd like to be in for my next shot so I can better visualize the spot I need to get to..... i.e. the position I'd place the cue ball if I had BIH on that next ball.

Previously I think I often tried to do it by instinct and sometimes I'd hit the shot exactly how i meant to, but end up in the wrong position because my quick calculation of where I should be was incorrect in the first place.

Meaning just what the question ask you! Have you done a lot of little things that helped? Or a few big things that helped your pool game a lot? Your opinion is wanted and needed, as it may help some of the AZB family members learn something to help improve their pool game. One thing about helping people, you cannot help them if they know everything in pool already!

A good thing i find, is when you first come to the table start with identical shot to make when you really cold/rusty say spot shot with cue ball in kitchen about a diamond of side rail, or ob mid table and CB 6" away from side rail and 10" from top rail, or long straight shot. Start with no english simple follow through soft shot, then medium, then hard, then introduce english, pay attention to when OB go, and why!

Most likely you might miss first shot, maybe second, know why you miss, this way the variables are in the mechanics eliminating ob/cb angle cuts variables. Ensure table is leveled, or shoot all shots at medium & hard speed

HA! Glad you like it. Great now that you're asking;).

Making solid progress towards a move for level 3 in the APA this coming season. All of my friends are enjoying my progress even if they lose more.
