Based on the pocket angle factor (PAF) table, I've updated your info as follows:

Side Pocket -- 10':1.10 -- 4 1/4":1.10 -- 145 deg:1.14 -- 2 1/4":1.07 -- 1.48 (10' 1920-1925 Brunswick, modified 9/2016)

Again, that's one tough table!

Catch you later,
Dave

Thanks. Yesterday was the first time I really got to put some time playing on it. Played a match against my buddy but I will be practicing on it tonight for a bit.

seeking TDF for Chinese 8 ball tables, I suspect it would top the list
That would be nice, but the TDF system, in its current form, only applies to pool tables with flat pocket facings. Curved pocket facings would require a totally different analysis and different measurements.

cloth speed?
cushion speed?
Currently, the TDF system only takes table size and pocket geometry into consideration. There are many more factors that could be taken into consideration (cloth type and condition, ball conditions, pocket facing and shim properties, rail and cushion conditions, table levelness, humidity, etc.), but we decided to keep the TDF system as simple as possible, while still capturing the most important elements of table difficulty with as few measurements as possible (with the measurements being easy and free from qualitative judgement). For more info, see the table difficulty (TDF) resource page.

Dave

Do these Table Difficulty Factors apply to a Snooker Table. I'm getting a NEW-TO-ME Brunswick 6-leg Arcade... 10 foot Snooker with #7 irons.

Do these Table Difficulty Factors apply to a Snooker Table. I'm getting a NEW-TO-ME Brunswick 6-leg Arcade... 10 foot Snooker with #7 irons.
The TDF (in its current form) applies only to tables with flat-facing pockets, so it doesn't work for snooker or Chinese 8-ball tables.

Sorry,
Dave

Nobody has posted info for a new or modified table in a while. Please post measurements for the tables of most interest to you (and others).

Thanks,
Dave

Based on ideas from previous threads on this topic (tight pockets thread and pocket answers thread), and based discussion in the Billiard University (BU) thread concerning how to account for table difficulty in scoring and rating drills like the BU Exams, I decided to create a system for determining how difficult a table plays (based on table and pocket geometry only). It is described in detail in the Table Difficulty Factor (TDF) document, which is convenient if you want a printed copy.

Here's how it works:

The Table Difficulty Factor (TDF) is a percentage measure of how difficult or easy a particular table plays. It is based on table size and the three corner-pocket measurements illustrated below. If the cushion is not 2” (5.1cm) thick, measure the throat size 2” (5.1 cm) back from the cushion noses. You can lay down Post-It Notes or masking tape to better define the lines and intersection points to help with the mouth and throat measurements. If you have an angle-measurement device, you can measure the facing angle directly instead of measuring the throat size. The pocket shelf depth should be measured from the pocket mouth line to the slate top lip edge (where the pocket opening first starts).

table_pocket_measurements.jpg

Four factors are used to account for table size, pocket size, pocket facing angle, and pocket shelf depth. Each factor is a number less than, equal to, or greater than 1, where 1 indicates average or standard. By multiplying the four factors, you get the TDF which is a good measure of table “toughness.” If TDF=1, the table has an average level of difficulty; if TDF>1, the table plays more difficult than average; and if TDF<1, the table plays easier than average.

The four factors are defined as follows:
table_difficulty_TSF.jpg

table_difficulty_PSF.jpg

table_difficulty_PAF.jpg

table_difficulty_PLF.jpg

The total Table Difficulty Factor (TDF) is then calculated by multiplying the four factors:

TDF = TSF x PSF x PAF x PLF

The TDF can be used to adjust numbers from any scoring or rating system like the Billiard University Exams, “playing the ghost” drills, the Hopkins Q Skills drill, or the Fargo rating drill. An effective score, taking table difficulty into consideration, can be calculated with:

(effective score) = (raw score) x TDF

NOTE – The TDF and effective-score numbers should not be interpreted too literally since there are so many other factors that contribute to how difficult a table actually plays (cloth type and condition, ball conditions, pocket facing and shim properties, rail and cushion conditions, table levelness, humidity, etc.). Here’s a rough scale one can use to put the TDF factor in better perspective:

still suggesting a chinese 8 ball estimate:smile:
I'll add this to my "list," but it won't be easy. I need to do do a geometric analysis similar to TP A.5 and TP A.6 for rounded pockets, and I need to do some testing on a Chinese 8-ball table (to which I don't have access).

But excellent idea!

Regards,
Dave

Dave, I've got one for you to add to the list. This is a 10-foot Gabriel's Sentinel model pool table - the only 10' Sentinel pool table that Gabriels ever produced. I have it in our poolroom, Family Billiards, in Boone, NC, but it is kept covered and can only be played on by certain regulars. It was made as a prototype table and used for the 2016 Deurne City Classic 10-Ball Challenge, in Deurne, Belgium/Netherlands in June 2016. Thierry Gabriels, who I had purchased my original Gabriels 9-foot tables from nearly 20 years ago, had given me the indication they would soon be producing these 10-foot models and I had an order in for one, but after waiting for nearly a year, immediately after the tournament, after I saw how well it played in the livestreamed matches I watched, I offered to buy the prototype tournament used table from my Gabriel's contact, and was pleasantly surprised a short time later that they had accepted my offer to buy the tournament used prototype Sentinel table. Apparently a short time later, they decided not to produce the Sentinel model in a 10' size, so I have the only Gabriels 10-foot Sentinel model ever made - with a 40mm thick (1.56") 3-piece granite surface and Klematch / Klebar cushion rubbers. I assume for this pro invitation tournament, the pockets were tightened at the factory with 1/2" thick of pocket facings to achieve the 4-1/4" corners and 4-3/4" sides. Joshua Filler, one of the up and coming young European players from Germany ended up winning this 16 player single elimination invitational tournament - with all matches being played on this table. For the first year, we had the table set up here just as it was for the pro tournament. This year, I had Ernesto Dominguez here to do work on a number of our tables, including re-working the rails and cushion rubbers on this table. He extended the subrails and installed new Klematch cushions and revised my pocket specs ever so slightly larger to 4-3/8", but now only using only 1/8" pocket facings at the end of all the cushions, so the table will play the way it should. The TSF rating for the 10-foot table is 1.1, the PSF rating for the 4-3/8" pockets is 1.05, the PAF measurement of 11/16" gives a rating of 1.02, and the pocket shelf depth measurement of 1-5/16" gives a PLF rating of .98. By my calculations, this computes to a table difficulty factor of 1.155. This appears to put me right on the borderline between tough and very tough in terms of your table difficulty ratings, which I can certainly attest to, and looks like this rating might put this table in the top 10 toughest tables in your current list of ratings. I can also attest that the table certainly plays easier / fairer now than it played before Ernesto reworked the rails and cushions. One final question for you, how would you compute table difficulty equivalence between side pocket mouth measurements and corner pocket mouth measurements. Personally, I can live with 4-1/4" corners more easily than I can live with 4-3/4" sides. In my opinion, anything tighter than 4-3/4" side pocket openings can completely change the way the game is played in regards to side pocket shots from angles. What do you think ideal pocket openings should be for pro level tournament tables - sides and corners? Thanks!
