Dear All:

After watching the colorful fireworks this week, let's add a colorful drill to the celebration!

Knowing the basic 3 rail system is a powerful weapon in one pocket and other games. The table condition and the player's stroke style will greatly affect the outcome. Hince we would like to help you determine your own system and hopefully it will come in handy one day.

ps. The prize for contest 06.06 is still available for the first taker, anyone wants to give it a shot?

Wish I had a camera...I might see how much video I can store on my digicam and set it up to try :)

I was playing pool with my "little brother" (from the big brothers big sisters program) and he was messing around with another cue ball on the next table while I was running out on him (I put my car up against his PS2 that he couldn't beat me 1 out of 10 games :p). He said OK, first one to make it in a pocket after hitting a rail wins (didn't have to be 3-railer). So I agreed, set up the shot and split the center of the pocket. He said OK do it 5 times. I hit it a couple more times in a row, heh. So I showed him how to hit it (he's only 10 and not a pool player) and he sunk it the very first shot! Miscued the next 3 attempts, but still I was proud.

Additional Rule

For tables that play short, you are allowed to move the balls away from the rail (check Page 2 in the table diagram).

Here is a picture for Page 2:

If you have a great drill to share to people please let us know. We might have it as the contest for the next month:)

Thanks, I'd missed that and have been knocking myself trying to see if I can run all of them. So far my best run was seven (1-7) and then I always seem to mess up around 8-9-10. Of course I also need to borrow a camera from someone to actually record my efforts!

My best run was 13 balls.

OK, 13 was my best run. The video is up on YouTube now.

It was an interesting experience. In the end the method that worked best for me was to use a piece of chalk every half-diamond for aiming guides. I found the best method to keep my aim line was to stay in position until each shot had completed, then shuffle a ball's width to the right and get down to shoot the next ball, which kept me moving parallel to the shot.

The main problem was that once I'd made 6 or 7 balls I had to move to take the balls out of the pockets (I've never cursed having drop pockets until now) as I'd lose my position. It took me a while to figure out to place a piece of chalk on the ground next to my left foot so I could get back to the same spot again.

I actually made a complete run from the 1 to the 10 in one attempt. I ended up missing 4 of the last 6 balls so it was not the run I included, but it was still gratifying.

I also found I got better results using almost no left english at all. By staying near center ball and adjusting the aim point up the rail a bit I got more consistent results until the very last few balls.

Great job, AuntyDan! :D :D :D

With a ball hanging by the corner pocket, and your cueball anywhere on the table, would you now say you are over 90% confident to 3 rail kick the ball in?:)

Everybody, Aunty is the only one in the money for this contest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBfhzZjhdq4). Anyone else care to give it a try? We are giving out $50 to first 3, plus a drawing for the rest who joins.

Also, if you have a drill layout for our contest next month, please send it to me.

Cheers
Wei

Hi Aunty:

Observing from your video, it looks like the ball paths on your table goes this way :

http://CueTable.com/P/?@1AYaM1BYae1...4jayo6jcYozc1kYfU3kbmJ4kBEk4kays6kcpqzc4uAAI@

The first rail hits were between 1st and 3rd diamonds
The last rail hits were all within 1/2 diamonds range of second diamonds
The 15 ball went short. Was it because of accidental dipping in ?(normal when shooting over a pocket)

This is a very interesting video to study for everyone!

:)

Actually my 1 ball was hitting the rail just about directly on the first diamond. (I.E. I was aiming below the chalk cube on the first diamond)

My table has Champion Tour Edition rubber rather than the Accufast on most Gold Crowns. I find it's response rather more "sharp". On most Gold Crowns with old Accufast rubber I find I have to shoot much closer down towards the corner pocket (Typically half a diamond from the corner) on the 1 ball to make the shot.

Another thing I noticed is that you seem to have a slight error in the proportions/size of either the table or the balls. I setup my balls (Regulation size Super Pros) starting with the cue ball exactly 1 ball width from the head rail. When all 16 were lined up the 1 ball was almost exactly at the third diamond from the head rail. In your current table setup the 1 ball ends up nearly half a diamond further down the rail.

Help Needed on This!

A tough call here, please help me on making the call

We now have another shot competitor: Mr. Tim Chin of Cambridge MA with 14 balls out of 16 tries

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGJAtweHZ9U

Great job! However, Tim is honest (Props to Tim) to inform me that he did the run in his dorm room where the pocket is a little bigger than regular size, which might have made it a little easier. (check the 7 ball in the video, maybe we have to deduct that)

Again I am seeking people's advise on how to make a fair call, please let me know your opinion on this.

As of now the leading man is still Aunty Dan with 13 balls:

Hi All,

Here's my 14/16 entry...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIdU2gHmGbo

I'll see if I can get a 16/16 up before the month is out but wanted to make sure my entry was in. Do any video experts know why a perfectly still camera can go in and out of focus like in my video? Maybe I can find a setting to turn some auto focus off once I set up.

Hi Andy:

Great Job! you might want to see if there is a way to set "auto focus" to manual on your camera. (the AF system on your camera was trying to focus on the moving ball in the video)

Also, is this the same table you used for the last month's entry (4.5 inch pockets?)

Hi Wei,

Yes, same table - 4.5 inch pockets.

On a quest for 16/16 with camera and pool focus!

Andy - Nice job. Now you mention it I notice the same auto-focus shifting on my video too, only not as extreme as yours.

Wei - My opinion on your question about whether Tim's entry should be allowed, the rule about entris made on tables with larger than 4 1/2" corner pockets. I feel that this makes it restrictive for as many people to participate who might want to, so perhaps you can have 2 sets of prizes, or a ranking system for winning entries. So in this instance Andy's entry should rank higher than Tim's. Perhaps a 1 ball handicap as standard would be fair, so Andy's 14 would rank the same as my 13.

I have update the scores on the contest page.

After watching Tim's video closely I have noticed a lot of his shots went straight in without touching the rail. The 7 ball rattled a bit so I marked it off. Great effort on Tim's part.

The contest series is still young and the rule system obviously is not perfect yet. I appreciate everyone's inputs and will continue to improve it so people can enjoy.
