I finished the book in 1 day. great read that I did not expect. lots of stuff about the midwest and I knew alot of players. I was looking for my name but it was not there. I guess the 40 bucks i donated to the skinny kid wasnt worthy of mention. oh well.

this book was just as well written as playing off the rail and is very timely. hope it is a movie.

I bought this book and also "The Hustler and the Champ" which is about Mosconi and Fats and is a great read so far. I've read the first 60 pages or so and it details some interesting facts about Mosconi and Fats that I have never read anywhere else and Mosconi didn't want anyone to know. I haven't started the delicious book yet but I am happy to hear that it is good.

I agree it was a very good read. Fast paced and lot's of the matching up details, which is always fun to hear.

There were several inaccuracies, some pool related, some not. For example, the author states that a Pennsylvania State Trooper " with a goatee" and facial hair gave Danny a warning for speeding on the turn-pike. Well, the Pa State Police have a NO FACIAL HAIR POLICY that has been in existance since forever. Little things like that make you wonder about the veracity of the taller tales.

On the plus side, the author goes into great detail about the inner machinations of Danny's mind and thought process. He doesn't sugar coat his faults, either.

I liked The GosPool and Hustler Days better, but this was still a very good book overall.

There's six or seven pages about his time here in Fargo, and it's pretty fair I would say.

...It was probably a local cop not a genuine S Trooper that's all. That is really stretching to think that this small thing calls into question the veracity of anything else.

BTW-Kid Vicious's real name is not Hubler either and the guy who owned Hi Pockets was Hadges not Hodges. If the author spent forever trying to verify every small detail, he'd never get the book out.

It's a great book and every thing that I'm privy to in real life was depicted accurately in the book except the meaningless minutia of the type noted above.

Is derby city really like he says in the book? Non stop gambling on anything and everything? High stakes coin tosses? Sounds too crazy to be real.

I haven't read the book, but as a frequenter of the DCC; I would have to say definitely.

I lost money betting on the range of pages escorts would be found on in the Louisville yellow pages.

Fragged,

Did you read the part where I said "There were several inaccuracies, FOR EXAMPLE"??? This was the one I chose. It didn't mean it was the biggest of deals, get that?

As for you guessing it was some "local cop not a genuine S Trooper", local cops are not allowed to patrol the Pa Turnpike, only real S Troopers. The whole gist of the author putting that in the story was to show that Danny can "sweet talk" his way out of anything, even a speeding ticket for 90 some miles an hour. I don't buy that, but it did not ruin the book. Is that better for you now?

I was at Powell's Books in Portland, OR this past weekend for the first time. What a place! Such an enormous building with many different wings with new and used books among each other on the shelf. Of course I had to check out the pool section. I picked up a "Playing Off The Rail" original hardcover edition in pristine shape for $12. I also picked up the "99 Critical Shots in Pool" original soft cover in fairly good shape. They also had the second edition and the 30 year anniversary edition but I went with the old one for histories sake. They had some other Mizerak, Byrnes, other books as well but only picked up those two.

The book is really good. Just got it today and read first two chapters in Barnes & Noble before purchasing. Will read the rest tonight. I rank it just behind Hustler Days as my all time favorite. Only because Wimpy is my all time favorite player. Never saw him play way to young; but read the Lions and the Lambs when I first started playing. Since reading that he has been my favorite player.

Yes the Derby City is like that
