Looks like someone worked on it before.

That ferrule material is soft and cuts easy.
Doesn't surprise me at all.
Someone probably used a pencil sharpener to trim the edges

2 years ago at my yearly tournament gig,a customer brings me a shaft just like this.

The ferrule was cracked, but not length wise, because when I took the first cut on it,it came right off about like the pic shown here, with a .005 deep cut.

He said he broke with it regularly. I asked him if he wanted something tougher than that, even though it might change the hit to an extent, and he agreed so I made the new ferrule from Schmelke LBM.

No news is good news so far . Tommy D.

Another WTF.
Maple tenon is .340.
Then there's some really nasty wood sleeve on the smaller tenon up front.
I have no idea yet if it came from the McDermott factory that way or someone worked on it.

That's from McDermott Joey, I've seen the same thing on their shafts. Not sure what they are trying to accomplish with that setup.

Low deflection by using that lightweight and soft wood.
It is not hollowed at the end.

I agree that's what they are trying to do, but the amount of maple they are removing for this other wood, I don't believe it's enough to make a noticeable difference.

McDermott isn't the only one that does that. I took something like that off of an OB shaft. Possibly lost some of it's low deflection properties in the process, but the ferrule came off and took half of it with it, and it wasn't worth trying to replace.

Fixed.
Mason Micarta ferrule, CF backing and Ultraskin M.
I test shot it.
Still low deflection. The yellow in the center is foam.
The tenon is some .420".
I reduced it a little to make it concentric. Used a 4-flute carbide end mill.
No way I was going to use a tool bit.
Fab'd a ferrule. Glue rings and channels inside.
I will see if it stays. I know the owner real well.
