How important is the hop on Shane's break?

Ask him if the same results could be obtained without the hop. I know the answer already but I'd rather hear it from the Master.

So do I. See post #2 lol

I tried some serious long term break practice+experimenting and did shoot straight four hours just 10-ball break.. Now my shooting arm feel like it is spaghetti and my back is hurting also(rheumatism can't handle it seems)

So there is something to think. Shane said he shooted 3 months several hours per day just break shots. It surely strengthened those muscles that are working at break shot.

Also what I noticed is that my break consistency sucks..

I just did I did a 10-ball-rating-drill set and posted it on the Billiard University (BU) playing-ability-exam scores and ratings thread. Here it is:
https://youtu.be/XMnvSD5SqtI

I had my break working fairly well, pocketing a ball every time. I pocketed 5 balls on the break once (the 2nd rack)! I also pocketed 3 balls on the break twice and 2 balls three times. That sure makes the run-outs (or attempted run-outs) easier.

Was I trying to make the CB hop? No.

Was the CB hopping? Yes.

When I used a little extra speed, the CB hopped a little more. One of the big-hop breaks (rack 2) resulted in 5 balls being pocketed. Another (rack 10) resulted in only 1 ball pocketed (with the best CB squat).

Watch out Shane, cause I plan to work on the break some more. :grin-square:

I definitely have lots of room for improvement (e.g., I need to get rid of sidespin that happens often).

Regards,
Dave

2nd break was NICEE!!

I played AmRo ghost yesterday but he smoked me.. :(
I noticed after i watched and analyzed my game that i was hitting break pretty sweet.
Took some breaks out from that. I personally think that break is good enough.

Now i just need to do it everytime :grin-square:

ps. I was breaking with my playing cue(elk master) because Official AmRo break/jump cues are forbidden. Joe T made great new video btw where he really made rules easy.

Thanks. That was the only time I've ever made 5 balls on a 10-ball break.

Nice ... especially the CB squat on several.

Thanks for the link. I hadn't seen that video yet. I've added it to my American Rotation resource page.

Thanks Satori. :happydance:
I think this thread was quite a informative and it gave me extra motivation to practice break.
It´s been some months now after this thread and finally I start be happy on my break and consistency of my break too...
I really feel that angle how cueball hops is crucial. Or actually it is the angle cueball hits one ball. If cueball rebound angle is right it will come back enough so cueball won´t now scratch even if one does not hit perfectly. It will bend below middle pockets.
Also spin is other that affects a lot. If one hit too much low to compensate too much hop from cueball(and topspin that is created by hitting one ball airborne) one ball get brakes and it will not have power to go near back corner pocket. All these complicated variables can be learn if just start put some work on break like Shane said on interview "Just shoot them so long it comes natural".

I´ve done that now and will continue do so.
Here is top 5x SlowMo breaks I take out from last Ghost match(11 breaks, 3 bad breaks, so consistency start to be ok level). I put some more analysis now on my break and that is why I made this vid.
I still have weird(fast) head turn somewhat present but all around I think my break start to be near pro level.

Ps. Warning anyone that gonna put some hours towards breaking protect your hearing.. I did manage hurt mine and will use earplugs for now.

I'm surprised you didn't break with a closed bridge Dave, you lose a fraction of the speed and energy by breaking further from the rack.

Allow me to quote Royce from another thread about 4 years ago:

The thing to keep in mind about the break is that it's not all about speed and power.

A good break comes from putting the most amount of energy into the rack and controlling the cue ball for the next shot. Far too many people lose all their power with inconsistent and off center hits on the front ball.

Power is often over rated, and control is definitely under rated. A good break cue should make it easier for you hit the rack square and consistent without the cue ball coming off the table surface at all. When your cue ball flies in the air, you are losing power.

Am I the only one who just wants the pop the cue ball on the break because it looks cool?

Yeah...I thought so. :frown:
