Identify this Cue?

A friend of mine is trying to identify this cue. Can anyone help us. It's from the sixties and probably from the east cost. The butt is 29" and the shaft is 27 1/2". There is no writing or labeling in the "window" on the butt. The butt cap looks to be held on with a flathead screw, but we don't know if that is original. Anyone?????? Thanks, Curt

Cue Id

Larry May Be Right. Without The Cue In Hand It Is Very Difficult. If It Is A Custom Cue, I Would Say Doc Frye. He Used Those Rings And That Style Butt Sleeve. Are You Able To Send The Cue For Id?

lets put this to rest. only 2 cue makers to my knowledge ever used clear plastic in the bottom of their cues. 1 was palmer billiard who used to be in nj. and the other was paradise cues, made by frank paradise.
Now for my opinion, for what ever it is worth, i believe it is a paradise cue based solely on the butt design. a friend here in albany ny has one very similar to it. if they were people you would swear they were related.
get the cue blue book and look up paradises cues and see if you can find one that is close or very similar................................mike

Mike,

George Balabushka also used the clear plexi-type butt sleeve on his early cues as well. You can see an example of it in the current edition of the Blue Book of Cues. Its almost exact to the one picture here in this thread.

There are 3 possible answers to your question. It looks to me that it's a Paradice but then again it could be a Palmer or Rich.

My input

Never saw a joint like that on a Paradise or Palmer...looks more like a Rich.
I had a Rich that looked real close to this one.

Aside from the others mentioned, Early Vikings also used the clear windows, as did some Mali's and an imported cue that was a knock-off of the Mali, called the Bellweather or something like that. All that being said, I have no idea what it is - doubt it's a Rich. If there is no bumper, and that's the way it came, yes it could be a Paradise or Palmer, but you need to take it to a specialist in those brands to be certain. Just my $.02 worth.

Adios,

Looks a lot like my old Balabuska, which was identical to the one Cicero Murphy used for years!

If I am not mistaken there were only three of the cues made like the Cisero
Murphy had. 2 were still with the original owners or had been with the
owners for quite some time. The third was in Miami and then was sold.

In the last 10 years or so I have heard a lot of people say that thye have the
exact (exactly like) cue that Murphy used to have.

Do you know what happen to Murphy's cue?

I do know where 2 cues are that are dead identical to it. At one time they
were placed side by side.

Whats a cue like that one worth?

I have never been sure on the "only three" part but most people all say the
same thing. Whats weird is that if there were only three then two ended
up about 100 miles apart from each other in the middle of no where.

BTW- I bought a cue of yours a while back and liked it but since then decided
to sell almost all of my cues. Now I may be in the mood again. Maybe in a
year or so.

The cue I had, (the one pictured) I took in a trade from John Wright about 1 1/2 years before Gus Szamboti passed away. I had just received my new Gus Szamboti a few weeks before. It was one of the fancier cues Gus made with a bunch of ivory inlays in the points and butt. Bushka rings above the wrap, red veneers. It was awesome. I was at a tournament in Indianapolis where John tracked me down. He'd heard through the "grape vine" about my new "Boti"! He made me several offers on the cue, each time I told him, It's not for sale! He laid out his display case with a dozen exotic cues. Maybe we can trade. He had the Bushka, with 5 shafts (2 original, 3 Doc Fry along with a letter from Doc Fry authenticating the cue) several Joss West cues, etc.. He said he'd take my cue and a few hundred to boot for the Bushka. I told him I'd take the Bushka and a Joss West for my cue, just to shut him up! He said that's rediculous, I can't do that! Five minutes later, he came up and told me, "OK , You've got a deal!" I didn't really want to trade! I just told him that because I didn't think he'd make the deal and wanted to drop the subject! He insisted that I honor the offer and I did, regretfully! I lost a lot of sleep over that deal! Gus had been a mentor of mine. He used to sell me ivory ferrule blanks and actually helped me a lot when I had specific cue construction questions. When he heard I'd traded my new cue, he was "hot as a firecracker"! He yelled at me on the phone and hung up. It was a month before he'd even talk to me! That was one of my biggest regrets in life, trading that cue! The Balabushka made me sick every time I looked at it, so I sold it soon after. I think Pete & Dennis Glenn bought the cue, but I wouldn't swear to that. I had 13 Boti's and 2 Bushkas all together, but only the one that Gus MADE FOR ME! I forget who ended up with what, when I split them up. Rich Ford from Cleveland bought a few of them IIRC. I was collecting Botis when you could buy them for under $300. Some of the guys in my poolroom had Szamboti cues they purchased new for $110. A good friend of mine has a REAL rare one. One of few (literally) made with the Wico plastic veneers like Gordon Hart used a lot in the OLD Vikings!

I have dealt with John before and have never had a problem. Others
say differently but he has treated me fair and he has nice cues.
I lost a JossWest in a trade deal just like yours. I didnt want to
trade so I told the guy something crazy and then added plus $50.
He was on me about it all weekend(we were at a Tex Ex tournament)
and when I was leaving he came over and said okay.
I was in shock. I got a really nice Dale Perry and 3 Schons and
of course the $50 bucks. Not sure why he did it. The Dale Perry
was great to look at but I didnt like the hit. Really nice looking design though.
I think one of the Schons was a LTD. It was a crazy deal but I wish
I still had that JW.
Just recently I saw a really fancy Gus Szamboti. NOt sure what site.
Maybe Classiccues. ALot of Ivory.

cicero's balabuska

in an older billiards digest(I think) there was an article about a pool player running into cicero at a tourney, planning on raffling off his balabuska. the guy immediately bought ALL the tickets, thus buying the balabuska. not sure what the month year was but I am sure it was in the early 90's.

Although a few did the clear buttplate, I would guess Rich due to the shortness of the joint pin.
