GENERALLY, what country takes gold/silver/bronze?

I don’t want the thread to derail into a discussion of how it depends on which game, table size, etc. Keep it general, for fun. Only exception would be if the game is Carom.

My guesses:

Gold- Philippines
Silver-China
Bronze-Taiwan

Yeah, Asia will sweep.

Gold: China
Silver: Taipei
Bronze: Philippines

The Philippines will probably edge it in the men’s events but there will be a whole load of countries challenging them. China and Taipei will challenge for medals in all the men’s events but will dominate in the women’s events ensuring they finish one and two overall. This will apply regardless of which pool variant(s) is chosen - certainly 9 ball and possibly 8 ball.

Yes carom will be a different thing altogether. As will snooker.

They'll never do it but i wish they'd play 14.1 in the Olympics. Lot less luck involved unless only 10ball is played. A gold in 9ball could be won on pure luck.

Sorry to pour water into the wine, but it depends on:

1. Whether it English pool or American pool;
2. Snooker or pool.

English pool is popular in the UK.

American pool is popular in the USA and internationally.

Snooker is popular in the UK, China and Canada.

A lot of variables involved to consider.

C&A :)

GENERALLY, what country takes gold/silver/bronze? ...
If you're interested in how cue sports might look in international multi-sport competitions, such as the Olympic Summer Games, the Pan American Games, the Asian Games, ... then you should look at cue sports in the World Games. They have been in the World Games since 2001 in Akita, Japan. The next World Games will be in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2021. If cue sports are accepted in the 2024 Olympic Games, the format is very likely to be the same as in the World Games.

That format is: four events with sixteen players in each event. The player selection is done in such a way that there is wide international representation at some expense to having the 16 top-ranked players. The events are: men's and women's nine ball, men's 3-cushion, and men's snooker.

In the World Games in 2017 in Poland, the final matches were:
Snooker -- Kyren Wilson d. Ali Carter 3-1
Men's 9-Ball-- Carlo Biado d. Jayson Shaw 11-7
Women's 9-Ball -- Siming CHEN d. Gayoung Kim 9-3
3-Cushion -- Daniel Sanchez d. Marco Zanetti 40-33

(In 2017 snooker was actually a mixed event, but 2021 will be back to a men's event.)

The results for the 2017 World Games are at: https://theworldgames2017.com/en/results/ if you are interested in the bronze medals.

To be fair though, it makes a huge difference!

Its one thing to say, who would win if it was any game played on a US table, thats up for debate.

But if its 'billiards' ex carom then that does include snooker which would be a pretty boring:

1) UK
2) China
3) ?

Realistically the most widely played game is 9-Ball and (depending on whether it was singles, doubles, team format etc) I suspect your top 3 looks about right (although if singles then you could easily get a random US or European making it into the top 3).

Not an answer to the original question.
But if we send Earl that will be the first and last year for cue games in the Olympics.

Olympic format test

Because of the IOC wanting to decrease the number of athletes, as well as events, it would be impossible to go with the current World Games format.

The WCBS came up with a Team format that will briefly be tested in an exhibition in Paris on march 11-12: Three players per team for 3-cushion, 9-ball and snooker.

There will be 4 teams of men in a round-robin, with the best two playing a final match; same with the ladies.

The teams will be France / Europe / Asia / Rest of the World - remember it is for test purposes only and see how the format could work within two to three days to reduce cost, number of medals while still maintaining gender equality and geographical representation.

If you care about the Olympics please go sign the petition, anything that looks popular and massive can only help!

That's an interesting format. It seems like it could get some countries/areas to try disciplines they have never seen. Such as 3-cushion in the UK.

Well, this was just reported by AFP ...

Breakdancing is one of four additional sports expected to be included at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris along with surfing, sport climbing and skateboarding, sources indicated Wednesday.

The list of additions is due to be revealed by the local organising committee (OCOG) on Thursday and must be signed off on by the International Olympic Committee.

... which kind of makes the March billiard demo competition moot.

I think pool needs a new group fighting for its cause. I couldn't believe it the other day on TV when there was mention that the 2020 games in Tokyo was actually going to include 3x3 basketball event. What a joke.

Its probably something simple, like non formal compliance with IOC drug testing requirements or some other protocol issue in reality (they may never say that publicly and I'm just speculating of course).

For me the Olympics would be far more interesting if more sports were introduced, rather than variants of sports that are already in there!
