What does it mean to be American? - 09-15-2019, 05:17 PM

A simple question that I believe a lot of people don't know the answer to today.
In your own words, please explain what it means to you to be an American.

Foreigners may answer, but please state your nationality.

A Canuck checking in.

There are 35 countries in the Americas....23 in North America...12 in South America.
....everyone of those citizens can logically call themselves Americans.

So maybe a clearer definition of a citizen of the United States of America is needed.

Yeah, Jason, I know what you mean....but I think this needed to be said.
A lot of people in your country are in the same position as a Mexican I was gambling
with in El Paso was....he called me a Norte Americano....
...I told him if he ever took a big win to invest in an atlas....you might be surprised to find
that you’re a Norte Americano also.

Since Spanish is gender sensitive...I guess I could mention Norte Americanas....
...but how should I call all them other $&#@ genders that seem to be popping up?..

From US News....based on a “variety of metrics”.....Canada is ranked #3 in the world.
The US of A is ranked #8

So if we’re one of them “shithole countries”, you might want to redefine your position.

Yeah, Doc....I know you weren’t including my country....but a lot of people, including many
lurkers, read NPR, so I think that it needed to be said also.

...and I feel that if all the crimes against humanity that OUR countries have committed
were listed, we wouldn’t be so proud.
Never the less, I feel we’re lucky to be living in Canada or the US of A...

It doesn't need to be said. We can play the semantics all day long. The other posters also know what I implied as well as everyone else. This site, AZBilliards, is within the United States as AZ stands for Arizona, so it is implied that American means the United States. Others just chose to be smart asses instead of answering the question. That's ok, there are plenty of them around. Try finding a sincere, honest, intelligent, inspiring person. Those are a lot rarer.

I also asked for a reply in "your own words" and the first response was quoting our forefathers. I wouldn't have expected anything else from that poster. People often wonder why politicians never seem to get things accomplished, well its gibberish and double talk all day with these imbeciles. Yes, I know...they are going to try to paint me as a high horse American fool, because that is what they do. Semantics, belittlement, slander, ridicule are the tactics used.

Semantics investigates the meaning of language.
It gets trivialized by the people who screwed up language in the first place.
Words tend to devolve....so we got to come up with new words to convey the original meaning.
When you use ‘belttlement, slander, and ridicule as synonyms of semantics, it kinda pinpoints
the problem.

I haven’t meant to belittle you, but I’m the kid who stood up in grade 5 English class and asked
“We know now that Columbus made a mistake, so why are we still calling them INDIANS?”

So I think you’ve asked an interesting question, Jason.....but I think this question deserves
respect instead of “Well, ya know what I mean.”

I’m a high school dropout, but I don’t like the meaning of words shoved under the rug
when a serious question is asked.

I feel confident that the USA is number one at being the USA, and in fact no other nation comes close.

That one single metric matters most.

For non-nuclear nations like Canada that exist under the US nuclear umbrella, surviving on our coat tails, they have the convenience of doing all sort of things that make them "look good" because the US puts itself out there and does the hard stuff. In addition, Canada in particular has an economy very dependent on the US. About 77% of Canada’s exports go to the US, which makes up about 25% of their GDP. Of the largest economies in the world, none is as dependent on another country as Canada is on the United States. That's not unique from the perspective that many nations suckle at the teet of US success while measuring us with "metrics" that make us look bad, but it is extreme in the case of Canada.

You can list whatever you like, good, bad, ugly, whatever. I am very proud to have been born and raised in the USA. Maybe that's one of the differences.

I think we can agree on that.

But I don't just feel "lucky". I am very proud. Patriotic. And I feel I am luckier having been born and raised in the US rather than Canada.

No, I don't include Canada as a shithole country. It is in fact, very much like the United States superficially and exists synergistically with the US.

Canada is a great nation with great people. That's actually an insult in many people's view. Calling a nation great or even suggesting it in any way is apparently racist or something. What's interesting is that in a very large proportion it's the United States that makes Canada great.

Now, if Mexico could only capitalize on that better they might have something going.

I agree and I do care about the meaning of words also, but this is not a formal situation. This is a thread on a pool website. If I mispelz a word or too, God forgives us'es plez. Call the grammy police and then confiscate our AK's in the process.

It's well known what is implied by "American" across the world especially in the context that it was written. I don't need to defend it in any way. The responsibility shifts to the reader to comprehend it. If I was speaking to a group of school children (and maybe I am), I may elaborate.

This conversation is a waste of everyone's time.

That import/export relationship is a two way street....Canada for most of our history,
Is the biggest customer of the USA.

Back to my school days, I mentioned how lucky Canada got when the USA bought
Alaska from the Tzars....we needed that buffer zone from the USSR.
So Canucks that can think their way out of a wet paper bag are happy we got a great neighbor.

Now, if Mexico could only capitalize on that better they might have something going.
