Groove for leather wrap

Hey guys... What is the best way to cut the groove for a leather wrap?
A) Cut the area between centers with tailstock offset? Or
B) Chuck up close to area to be cut and use taper bar? Note: I have a Porper B lathe..... I tried between centers on an old cue and it bounced a little while cutting... Thanks for any input...

If its a new build I cut it after my final taper pass using the tail stock offset . I cut it in a few passes. I then do my finishing. After the finish I clean up the ends of the wrap groove with a single point cutter chucking up carefully just above the wrap. If I am cutting a wrap groove on a finished cue as an after thought I do the entire chanel single point, chucking above the wrap and using my taper bar. I do all my turning on metal lathes. The Porpers I reserve for sanding and finishing.

Taper bar or offset makes little difference. I would use a router to cut full groove except for last half inch or so at each end and finish that with single point tool once finish is on.
