I'd be curious to hear, from those of you with a deeper background, what you consider to be your favorite recorded 14.1 matches. Of course, you may really like a match because you are a fan of one or both players, or because the match was tense, or the commentary was really good, etc. -- all of which are valid reasons.

I've watched a decent number of recorded 14.1 matches (and challenge runs, but I'm not asking about those) in the last year and a half, since I picked up this great game again, and here are some that I would put on the list, to get things started (not in any order):

1. Ortmann v Miserak -- Tremendous play by Ortmann. Flowing more than precise. A wide array of exceptional talent on display. Made me say "Wow" out loud, several times. Engaged crowd, lots of (totally deserved) applause, with Miserak bemoaning his unavoidable fate. http://youtu.be/aVR-Vi7iv-I

2. Appleton's 200 and out against Bustamante. Enough said, as they say. http://youtu.be/-T425-DvtWk

3. Archer over Bob Maidhof in the Maryland straight pool challenge a few years ago. Full of the tension and tough breaks involved in many good matches between strong players. http://youtu.be/6bHPR66po8w

4. Hohmann 152 and out about 10 years ago. Great precision. Beautiful play. http://youtu.be/ZlEqBKHjYiY

5. Sigel v. Ray Martin in 2011. Just to hear the excitement in Max Eberle's voice, as he prepared to watch and provide commentary on the match, was enough to get me going. Seeing Ray Martin find a carom shot when almost no one else would see it -- taking a page right out of his own The 99 Critical Shots, in which he told us all to look, because the shot was usually there to be found -- was very cool. A real contrast in personalities and styles, and very neat to see such play from seniors (Martin was 71 yrs. old). http://youtu.be/D3TQ5Lbjems

6. Finally -- and this may be only an example, and not the epitome -- Hohmann v. Pagulayan in the World 14.1 tournament, for the simple reason that one gets to listen to George Fels provide commentary while watching world class players. Part 1 --http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7ny1PIfIt8&sns=em Part 2 -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qq6Fe9tcoio&sns=em

I may revise my "top matches" list heavily after seeing more video of past and future matches (although I have a hard time imagining that the Ortmann/Mizerak match won't be on my list). In fact, I'm hoping that you guys can enlighten me as to any number of great matches to watch. Lay it on me!

Cohen vs Immonen from 3 or 4 years ago was good. Both players put together nice runs.

Of course Crane's 150 and out vs Balsis although quality of video isn't best.

It's a shame there aren't any videos of Mosconi in his prime.

Dick Lane vs. Johnny Archer... 1992 US Open with player review. The commendatory by Lane is outstanding. Although watching a video match of a player running 150 and out is a good learning tool for a viewer. I find for myself that I like watching matches that do not have high runs. I totally enjoy watching two players battle it out and attempt defensive shots against each other. To see Pros not running big numbers shows that we are all human. It has always giving me hope that if one is consistent, one can win. I have taken note all my life that almost all the time the player with the high run in a tournament does not win the tournament.

Agreed that no Mosconi video in his prime is our loss - but there are some great
match videos, some already mentioned. I always loved the Irving crane 150 and out
Especially with wispering joe Wilson doing the commentary.
Attached is a short video 9:30 (creative straight pool ) a match between
Efern Reyes vs C.J Wiley - Beautiful old school playing by Efern
Enjoy.

One of my favorites.

You have some very good taste, David. in addition to some of the standards, you have the Souquet/Reyes with some nice Nick Varner commentary, where Ralf does most everything right. The Engert Robles one not everyone knows about. Thomas Engert is so smooth in that one. Just watching it help's one's rhythm.

Rempe/Hopkins 1992 US Open is another good one.
There is a good Sigel Mizerak with accu stats

Here is another little gem if you like old style straight pool:

I knew I'd forget something - I have that and (like most Rempe videos) it's one of my favorites. As to Engert, if memory serves, his 2006 semi final match against Immonen is another of those "Engert rhythm" matches. Another fine Straight Pool match I'm forgetting is an older Hopkins vs Hohmann - know/remember which?

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

I'll have to look at that Engert Immonen one again.

Hopkins Hohmann was in the 2007 World Tournament. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq_tO_P4OSU or here: http://pool.bz/straight-pool-videos...onship-thorsten-hohmann-vs-allen-hopkins.html

Old time pool.
From 1963 ABC Wide World of Sports.

That is a great match.. plus it has Leroy Kinman doing the play by play. Sad news, Leroy's beautiful wife just passed away. I went to the services. Leroy is in bad shape too. I had spoke to Leroy about this match and he told me that Mosconi was mad because he wanted to play to a higher score but Wide World of Sports would not let him. Leroy said that Jimmy could beat Mosconi all the time in a short match (125-150) but Mosconi would always play better the longer the match went.

Right, I believe that's the Hopkins vs Hohmann match I was referring to, although I seem to remember I have it in one piece somewhere rather than twenty. What I like about it is that one can see something in Hopkins's game that I like to show to students with low confidence in their stroke and shotmaking, which is that one can run a lot of balls without needing either.

Have and like that Colavita vs Garcia match, and seem to remember I have others (e.g. Colavita vs Martin and Garcia vs Massey).

Must admit that, simply because I'm a decent Straight Pool player myself, I'll seldom refer to matches as favorites in which one or both players (e.g. Rempe vs Hopkins, regardless of how instructive that match may be to watch otherwise, and overall, it still is a very well-played match, only one where I'd be mad at myself if I'd been either one of the players) have what to me look like mental lapses, worse yet, where both guys start missing as if one were witnessing some sort of spreading disease (e.g. Ortmann vs Mizerak 1989 U.S. Open final, as historic in its importance for the recognition of the game outside of the U.S., and instructive as that match may otherwise be) - simply because I've fallen prey to both (probably every Straight Pool player knows what I'm referring to here), and it makes me sick and want to throw up, literally, please excuse the graphic language, but I'd rather see a guy win (even if it's my opponent) than lose (and I'm saying that as someone who's battled out won by far most badly played matches, and I still hate it). Had to get that out of my system, sorry Dennis - I know you love Straight Pool as much as anyone, and can only assume you've witnessed your share of matches in which great player broke down and recovered (or not), and I agree it's part of the game and must be taken and accepted as such, I'm merely not sure I'd refer to any such match as a "personal favorite" for this reason, that's all.

Cheers mate! ;)

George Fels was one of the most knowledgeable commentators I've heard, and I would love to watch any match that he is commentating on. It would be great if there was of list of matches that he's on... no matter who was playing! There's always something to learn from listening to him...

Thanks to all of you who have replied and suggested (and provided links to) a number of videos of matches. Lots of great stuff, and I've only watched a few of them, leaving a small stockpile for the future.

I must reiterate -- for those of you who have not seen it, the Ortmann-Miserak match is (IMO) really compelling.
