I’ve recently become interested in playing straight rail/balkline billiards and enjoy it tremendously. I was curious what the difference in cues were for each game. Is there a preferred tip hardness for this game?

If you play 3C you should try this game. It has helped we with my accuracy in my hits and direction of cue ball after contact with ball. Also helped with super soft hits and controlling both balls. I play pool also and see where it can help my safety game and one pocket shots.

Main thing for me is tip size

I use 11mm, 12mm feels like a tree trunk when trying to make a small hit with 1inch bridge or less,

I also like 55 and 54 inch cues, dont know why but. 54 inch cue, shorter stubbier, can help your accuracy some

Weight i used to think mattered but now i dont think much

I have 14 and 18 ounce cues, heavier delivers more energy and gives the effect you want much easier from my experience

I just play with my 150 dollar 55inch 18ounce 11mm longoni now

Tip anything but hard,

Lol my 9ball game has improved, been making more caroms into the 9 for a quick win
Same with breaking out balls in 14.1

smaller tip dia similarity than 3c

all that extra meat from a 12mm or bigger tip can make things a bit less easy with the real short bridges used for these games, although im certain some players may use bigger
the majority however use smaller, from what ive seen, and ive went through most all the 1 cushion and 47.2, 71.2 and free game videos on kozoom by this point

Virtually all my customers who order a cue for libre specify 11-11.5mm tip, soft or medium tip, conical taper shaft, weight 16-17 oz.

Difference in weight

Weight of the cue is less then in 3C, less then 18 ounces for small game disciplines. I think playing 3c and straight rail mutually help the other discipline out.
