BEM - What to ask for?

I have had many custom cues made and mostly ones with BEM forearms. I've never asked to have the BEM stained but, some of the forearms come out with a nice honey color and others are pretty white.
If I want to order the cue so it has that nice honey colored tint in the maple. What do I ask for? Here are 3 cues I have that turned out with that nice honey tint.
Thanks guys for your help....B.F.

Some of them are stained slightly, or stained then sanded to bring the grain out. Most that I have seen, the difference is old growth, air dried having the honey color verses vacuum kiln dried newer growth being more white. The pieces on the left in the pic are OLD air dried and the right is vacuum dried purchased a couple years ago. The camera didn't get the color right, as there is a really big difference, but it gets the point across.

Bob, sometimes it is also a matter of what would be considered "heartwood" versus "sapwood." Generally speaking, one will be of a different color variation than the other. Most experienced cue-makers can also "honey up" the wood a little, with whatever recipe they might generally use. Best of luck.

Love that honey colored maple!
its a personal preference but I like the look.
Even prefer my shafts to be honey colored instead of the now popular white.
I don't like staining my wood and prefer it natural ... but sometimes to get a certain effect it is required.
Be sure to send your cue maker those photos to give him an accurate idea of the wood color you prefer.

I love the look and color of the middle cue in your photos.

Cherry stain or Nitric acid are two ways to achieve the look you want.

Forearm Stain

Hello Guys..
1st... Good post Bob... :)

guys,
A gentleman in California has this pretty Tim Scruggs Cue.
I wanted him to get the correct matching stain/color as his TS Cue's Forearm.
He is really nice and polite and I do care..
I want to do good for him..
"Pride in Ownership" is what it's all about. :)
And, I understand this feeling towards the cuemakers.. :)

I've seen this Stained Forearm on many older cues.

1) Would any of you know what kind of stain
was used on this by Tim Scruggs? or, those cuemakers of that era?

2) He also asked me, but, I am not sure,
what year did Tim build his cue..

Thanks for viewing.
Alton

If no one knows, take it to a GOOD paint store and using the computer, they should be able to match it with a custom stain

Hi Dave, Thanks.. :)

potassium permanganate mixed with water. Older method used also on gunstocks especially muzzleloaders.

When mixed up it has a purplish tint but the stain is reddish brown when dry. More coats, darker finish.

Thanks Rhino..

Hello Rhino...
Nice to meet you.. :)
Thank You for that information..
Amazingly like it seems..
Your replied answer sounds genuinely , the way old time Craftsmen would
have their "Secret Formulas" to do/accomplish their goals in their respetive Crafts.
Like the secret formulas to soak cue tips in,
secret formulas for shaft conditioners.

Thank you for that other post you posted about me.. :)
"I don't know who Alton is, but,.... "
That one
Thanks Rhino..

Had one cuemaker PM me and said just ask for a nice piece of dark birdseye for your forearm. LOL Makes sense to me.
