for the sake of the prize fund and the cost of food etc, wouldn't it be better to rent a warehouse somewhere? what's the benefit of being in a casino?

It might be cheaper to get the space in a casino as the casino probably offers some sort of deal since MR is bringing in extra revenue for them.

Stu, one correction here. If you have been to any of the MC's in Vegas the venue has been packed every day, some of the biggest crowds, all paying premium prices for tickets. There is a good reason that Matchroom has come back to Vegas and the Mandalay Bay with this event. They have been well supported in this country.

Yes, I have attended five Mosconi Cups in Vegas, but the Mosconi always has as many European fans as American when it's on home turf, while the American contingent was quite small when I went to Alexandra Palace this past December.

While I'm pleased by the level of participation of American players in this event despite the high entry fee, I think the stream will be a better indicator of the level of American fan support for this event than the level of American attendance. My guess is that the American pool fans will rise to the occasion this year.

See you Wednesday, Jay!

Hi Stu,

Perhaps I misinterpreted parts of your original post. To me, it read like a "spread the blame" approach while asking for exoneration.

Contributing to my view were the other posts about MRs last chance, etc.

I should know better than to form opinions based on random posts in a Forum.

I look forward to seeing you this week.

I think the wonderful announcement that Matchroom has taken over the WPA World 9-ball Championships (to be staged October 14-18 at a site to be determined) is something that everyone involved with pool helped eventuate.

My reason for starting this thread last April was to make sure that we all got behind Matchroom's efforts in their reconception and restaging of the US Open 9-ball. Their appetite for further investment in pro pool, I argued, would be greatly affected by how players, sponsors and fans supported their efforts at the US Open 9-ball.

It was a good sign when fans showed up at the 2019 US Open 9-ball and when so many bought the stream of the event. It was also a good sign when players signed up in droves, filling the 2020 US Open 9-ball field almost six months in advance. It was another very good sign when Matchroom significantly jacked up the added money for the 2020 US Open 9-ball.

Matchroom, our sport's premier event producer and promoter, has that good taste in their mouth that we'd all hoped for and are, consequently, now increasing their investment in pro pool by taking over the World 9-ball Championships.

As far as I'm concerned, it's a great day for pool. Thanks to Matchroom and to all those in our sport that supported their efforts to make our sport better.

maybe they should go after the World 14.1 Championship next !!!

Even momentarily ignoring that Matchroom has never touched any pool game other than nine ball, what financial case can you make for their taking on this project?

So, what young guns owe their career's to you and what does Larry Bird have to do with anything pool? I do agree it should be luck of the draw, you pull another champ so be it.

It has to do with racism.

It has to do with the burning hatred in the heart of KD for white people.

Just like most of his "heart felt" posts.

Nothing more and nothing less.

I wonder if we’ll have to pay for the next WPA World 9-ball Championships stream. Odds are we’ll get a much better stream and that it will be worth paying for.

Wish they could somehow get on ESPN +!!!
$5 a month.
And a lot of stuff is archived and easily retrieved.
*Speaking only from my experience with UFC content.
I think it would be much better than DAZN.

Please matchroom, if you’re reading this, don’t use DAZN. It’s the worst streaming/paying/cancellation platform I’ve ever used. I’ve regretted giving them my money every time.

Emily Frazer, COO of Matchroom Pool, said: “As we push professional pool on a global scale, it is important that we are consistent as well as recognisable universally among all big sports. Cue sports are played throughout the world with many specific pool games, however, 9-ball pool is the game that appeals to all viewers and lovers of the sport; it is competitive at the highest level as well as enjoyable for the casual spectator. With a growing portfolio of events and the global television coverage Matchroom Pool offers, it is important we simplify the game and encourage mass participation at all levels throughout the World and for all ages.

As much as I may not like it, it makes logical sense. 1 game, one promoter, soon (hopefully) one rule set. Standardize as much as possible.

I personally much prefer 8 ball or 14.1 for the strategy and cluster navigation, but completely get why they need a fast, easy to play and understand game for the masses.

Anyone else read that Matchroom is changing the names of the World 9-Ball Championship and the US Open 9-Ball Championship? They are replacing "9-Ball" in the titles with just "Pool." http://www.matchroomsport.com/pool/...l-championship-and-us-open-pool-championship/

Ugh.

I kind of think its better. Too many championships now. Makes the sport spread too thin when you have a 9 ball champ, 8 ball champ, 10 ball champ, straight pool champ, etc. That said, hopefully "this" championship for both the US Open and World Championship will be the two pinnacle events, trump all the other events combined in both their prestige and payouts.

Agreed 100%. These will be the most important events, and consequently, biggest titles in our game, eclipsing the clear number 3, the China Open.

Matchroom recognizes that to nearly all pool fans, pool and nine ball mean the same thing.
