Joined a TAP 8 ball league because the league operator put a bad player on a team that she thought was good and wanted to make up for it by getting them a actual good player (flattery works on me, what can I say LOL).

The first time you play it's an even race to 3 no matter who you play so they can get you handicapped.

I play the set, win 3-0 last week vs a player almost as good as me, but he happened to miss a few times at the last or second to last ball leaving me an easy way to win with an open table in 8 ball. Plus we got to play on a nicely setup table which always brings my game up a bit.

This week, I am a 7.4 which my friend told me is the top ranking in the city LOL

My ego is feeling good, which will probably last till I need to play a 3 on a bar table with dead rails and more rolls than a bakery. I just can't play on bad equipment. Must get to me more than those bar players who don't really know what the balls SHOULD do so when they do random stuff, it's normal to them. I can't fade the bad equipment.

I've never heard any good player say they need to hit the balls harder. I don't understand. Its usually the exact opposite.

I hit many shots softly, the supposed "pocket speed". When I miss, often that ball is left in front of that pocket, waiting for opponent to make.

Were I to hit it more firmly, if I were to miss, its likely to be somewhere other than right in front of the pocket I was shooting at.

Does that make more sense?

I really should just stop missing :)

i got what you are saying dub. in 8 ball you miss that shot you got the pocket blocked for their ball.

you miss the same shot in 9 ball you left your opponent a sitting duck.

it sounds to me like you are attempting a lot of stop ...or draw shots for position. you just gotta learn to let your stroke out a lil dub. that is what my team mate who is a 7/9 tells me all the time.

Sigh....there is a good chance I will be missing the Top Gun tournament that runs from a Friday-Sunday as I will be attending a wedding of a gal on my pool team. Maybe I can win a match or two Friday, win one Saturday early if they play and maybe that will be just far enough for a min cash as I will forfeit then...FML

Actually, I think if I was trying more draw/stop shots, it would be better, at least more firm. If I missed, the OB wouldn't sit in the pocket, save for a rattle. Nope, I play tap tap tap fairly well for playing on tables that aren't as true as they should be. That's the style that works pretty well for me playing 8-ball.

Don't get me wrong, I can play off a rail (or gasp, even two occasionally!!! :yikes:) especially if there is a moderate cut. But when I'm doing what I like to do, I'm usually leaving myself less of a cut which makes the next shot more accurate, usually.

I really need to take the time to really practice playing differently. Trying to choose a firmer hit choice all night, or at least for an extended period of time. Just to work at that "letting it out" folks keep talking about.

Thanks for listening, and the advice, gang.

we won last session barely..
3 points different total between 1st and 3rd! We were the high with 131.. I was the 2nd highest percentage shooter with 74% of games played being won.

Just started next session and we lost the first night..
I was not my best at all in 2 of the 3 races I played..

We play 9 games total.. 3 sets of 3 games against each player on the other team.
I won 2 of the first 3 against their best player then just couldn't get it together.
Glad their is a next week and something like 12-13 weeks left..

played my 9 ball play offs tonight.

started out bad them it got worse. we lost the toss. my co captain tells me we oughta throw my g/f 1st. worst 3 on my team. they threw a 4 who beat her 18-2.

2nd match they a 3. we throw a 5. he friggin loses 12-8. he is the same 5 you seen me complaining about on here that oughta be a 4. the way he played tonight i dont think he woulda beat that girl if he was a 3.

next my co captain says i oughta play. i am a 5 ...they throw their 8. got my butt whupped 16-4. it went 17 ininnings with 13 of them safes by him. i only gave him bih once but that was all he needed.

i said fvck it and went and played 1 pocket on one of the new diamonds we got in.

dont know how the next match went but it was not completed because they reached their needed points. did not even go 5 matches. worse loss we have ever had.

lemme give you a lil history of what i am faced with.

a girl ...who is now my g/f got me to join her team 3 years ago. at the end of the 1st session i told her i was quitting the team. she asked why. i told her there were too many drama queens on it.

her and this 5 i am always harping about decided to quit also and start a new team with me. she and him were captain and co captain.

a year goes by and i tell them i want a serious team that could make it to vegas. they turm the team over to me and i get a friend who was a 7/8 to join. next session i pick up a very good 5/7.

we win 9 ball and go to vegas. we come in 2 in the cities in 8 ball and automatically qualify for cities this year.

i keep telling my g/f that her friend is hurting the team . she don't wanna drop him cause
1. he is her friend
2. her and him are the only original members of their 1st team.

he is the type of player that will blow away a 4 one week and get blowed away by a 3 the next.

she and i got in an argument on the way home tonight because i said i want him off the team. she said no.

i asked do you want a good team or do you want just a fun team ? she fired back that i lost also tonight.

i fired back ...need i remind you who carried this team in vegas ? your friend lost to a 4 by 16-4. we were down 48-32 going into the last match. i blew away another 5 20-0 for us to win 52-48. i said my 2 nd match i won vs another 5 by 17-3. 3rd match i lost to a 7 by 1 point after being down 18-0 before i ever got to the tab;e. i asked what did your friend do ? i tell you what he did ...he got embarrased by every one he played...thats what he did. i told her ...heck you are only a 3 and you played better than him out there. i said your friend aint worth a damn when it comes to play offs. he cant handle the pressure.

she replied she did not want him off the team. i said fine.....if he ever loses to another 3 i quit and you and him can have the damn team.

i know i should not be taking league this serious but its just frustrating when you got the same guy constantly blowing your chances to make it through the playoffs and cities. i guess i am just gonna cool off a lil and see how it goes.

Depends on how soft they hit to begin with.

My son has missed many game winners because he babied the shot and either messed up his stoke trying to hold it back or hung the ball in the pocket because it did not reach or hid the facing but too soft to fall in. The balls, unless needed for position or some other factor, should not be hit so they barely dribble in the pocket, even if it's the last ball. A nice medium hit gives the maximum accuracy and chance of making the ball.

Damn, life interrupting pool just ain't right!

I just got a text and his wedding starts at 3...so I am going to check to see what time(s) if the bracket is already done for the top gun. I may be able to play 1-2 matches Friday and then if they start early Saturday another 1-2 to try to min cash lol....if not I will forfeit my spot to the second guy who is a friend of mine.

Was there any doubt???

I didn't play well but came back to win hill/hill vs a 6 which made me curious on a stat I wish was available. I would like to know what my hill/hill lifetime record is...could be a decent barometer on if I choke or finish well as a whole over all the matches. Having to spot some games probably means I play a decent amount of them, especially with lower handicaps.

i mentioned in an earlier thread i was quitting my apa 8 ball travel league to join an in house money league on tue nights. well that apa team made play offs for tom night and asked if i would be there. i told them yea.

as per my usual routine i looked up who we play and while on the website i was looking at my history.

gonna hit a milestone this week. 600 matches in my 3 years playing. wow !! i was playing apa 3 nights a week...now i am down to 1 night plus 2 nights napa and 1 night in house money league.

looked my my records from session to session and i see a troubling pattern. going down hill every session since my high of summer 2012. coincidently my declining win record coincides with the time i took over the team. i wonder if the head aches and hassles is affecting my game ? well that combined with getting older...be turning 60 in a couple of months.

i have fallen from a a high 59% in 8 ball as a s/l 6 in summer of 2012 to 39% this session as a 5.

also fell from a high 64% in 9 ball in spring 2012 to a 33% this last session...both as a 5.

my napa record has reamained consistent hovering around 50% for the 2 years i have been playing that league.

as i mentioned in a earlier thread i got a lot of drama ....which i intiated :grin-square:... wanting to get rid of one player in particular in order to have a competitive team.

i achieved my goal of taking this team to vegas when i took it over. i think i am just gonna turn this team back over to my g/f and her friend and just get back to just showing up and enjoy playing . fvck the drama and hassles....and fvck going to vegas again. been there done that:thumbup:

i am so mad, i could SPIT NAILS!!!!

yáll remember, that KK9 was OUT, if that guy was still in, right? yáll remember that he carried the team undefeated & they won 1st, right? yáll remember that the Captain wanted me to take that guy's place, as alternate - and i agreed, right?

well apparently - session starts TONIGHT @ 7pm. and @ 2:35pm, we get a call from the Captain, that he's been switched to 2nd shift & can't captain, nor play. wants to know if KK9 will play & if he could help a regular member w/ Team matchups...?

here's the kicker - all 7 previous players (including Captain), are STILL on roster AND no one is deemed an ALTERNATE. so THAT GUY, is STILL on the team!!!! (although they are technically short, their Captain, all season.)

is this allowed?

League meeting is @ 7pm....

.

i had a lil dilemna tonight. either play in my new money league or play in the apa 8 ball playoffs for the team i just quit in order to join the money league.

well it turned out the money league team had a bye tonight so it was an easy choice.:grin-square:

man i played great. !!

i beat a 6 who just got back from the singles nationals in vegas where he finished 5th. congrats david !!

i won 4-3 in a 5-4 race. shoulda been 4-2 but i dogged the 8 in the 4th rack and he ran out.:(

oh yea .... i don't know what the heck was goin on but i had a couple of funny breaks that probly cost me 1 rack also.

twice the cue ball flew up in the air when i broke ...hit the light and flew off the table. 2 times in a friggin row. i was breaking my normal position and my normal speed and that never happened to me before.

we were playing at their place so i don't know if it was the cue ball the way he was racking or what. i changed my position and my speed after that . never made a ball but at least i was not giving him bih after the break.

did i mention i played great and beat a 6 who just placed 5th in the singles nationals. :grin-square::grin-square::grin-square::grin-square:

Nice brag and great win.
There is nothing wrong with being proud of a victory...just don't let it go to your head!

I finished last session 9-2 and played like a puttz half of the session so I am probably fortunate to keep my 80%+ average going. I have a feeling if I play another 100 matches in the next 5 years that the ol average will come down some but we shall see. I compete fairly well and am definitely not an easy win for anyone, even the baggers.

I am still bummed finding out I won Top Gun for 8 ball but there is a good chance I may miss the tournament due to a wedding on that Saturday. The tournament starts on Friday so unless I can play a couple of times that night, maybe once in the morning (to try to min cash) then forfeit I am sort of SOL on this sigh...oh well. I can't miss the wedding so it is what it is.

Played last two nights.
Monday played great and lost against a lesser player
Tuesday played horribly and won against a better player.
Thinking I should practice my horrible game more.
