Why does pool attract so many broken, crazy, Degenerate, mental type people.

Our reputation for being lazy, larcenous, ne'er-do-wells is well deserved. Look at our history.
All of our heroes were gambler/hustler types who plied their trade from town to town, living hand and mouth, always looking for that next big score. Sometimes staying in grand hotels, sometimes the back seat of their car.
A few had money. Cokes, I believe, was said to be wealthy. Weenie Beenie owned a couple of hot dog stands. But in the main few had any appreciable means of support other than what they could muster on a pool table. We know that the great Lassiter passed with only eight dollars and change in his pocket.
To many of us pool players we view our heritage as a romanticized version of the old West, or the adventures Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Nothing could be further from the truth. As it turns out a life in the pool room is no life at all.
When I was fifteen and told my Parents about my first experience inside a pool hall they were dead set against me going back. A dark, smoke-filled room populated by gamblers, ex-cons, and old men who drink from bottles in paper sacks was no place for a teenage boy. They were right, you know.

The stereotype image of the thread title doesn't seem to fly in some circles, thank goodness.

The recent Iowa event is evidence that pool attracts women, men, boys, girls, senior citizens. Check out this video: http://www.kwwl.com/story/34726391/2017/03/10/statewide-pool-tournament-comes-to-waterloo

Yeah. No doubt it does too. You won't see those people there at 1am on a Saturday though. Lol. You'll see something else.

the pool scene is very capatalistic but also very democratic. if you have money and time you can enter the pool food chain. you can be a sucker or a champ and it doesn't matter who or what you are... and if you don't like it then the pool scene will probably turn on the offender because most of us have been a bit of a derelict or 'just felt the need to hear balls clacking together'" and i could type forever, but i like the pool world as it is with all its warts and scars and good people and hero worshippors and yes, bad men because i personally love it.

You wanna meet strange, odd, different people whose lives have dissipated into meaninglessness due to circumstance both within and beyond their direct control?

Come to work with me for a couple of days. I or any other number of other workers, will point out a good dozen to you whom we have to interact with on a daily basis. And I'm talking about skilled laborers here.

People down on their luck, out of luck, or who have unfortunately rarely had any luck are everywhere, are not just in pool halls. I don't personally see a disproportionate number of them at the pool hall I frequent.

Two places I don't frequent at all that depress the hell out of me, as some have already pointed out, are local dive bars and the other even more truly depressing places to me, are casinos.

I only visit casinos for the buffets on my camping group trips, but there's nothing as sad as seeing pensioners (who otherwise appear to still have the health and mental capacity to benefit society in some means) glued to the Blackjack machines losing their money that could be put to better use.

I certainly have seen plenty of characters at pool halls and at dive bars playing pool, but why shouldn't they play pool?

I'm going to make an unqualified guess here, also. I'll say the odds are that most of us who prefer seeing "characters" and may even derive entertainment from interacting with them on a regular basis are lifelong centralized urban city dwellers who have been exposed to various urban lifestyles, legal or illegal, and simply are used to dealing with those lifestyles on a more regular basis.

I used to occasionally go and shoot pool at Lenny's on Wisconsin Avenue (the original Romine's) in Milwaukee just for the entertainment value. Many people would consider it a high crime area (near Marquette University). You had a serious street crowd in that joint. Practicing was near impossible because there was always somebody worth watching or listening to. Serious entertainment bang for you buck there. It's been closed for a while, I believe.

I, today, could afford to go live in a tighty-whitey village out in the burbs, but personally I'd go nuts and die of boredom and depression if I had to spend most of my time dealing with those boring ass people whose whole life goals are to isolate themselves from what happens in the city.

I too am a laborer in NYC. I see plenty of colorful on a daily basis myself. But pool is a hobby/game that attracts them. Its just different than other hobbies.

It is because of the ease of getting a gambling game with a stranger. You can walk into a bar and get a small gambling game easy enough for those too messed up to hold a job to make some money to support their lifestyle. Golf is usually played with friends. Poker games are usually private other than the new hold-em leagues. I never heard of someone making a living with out keeping a schedule playing ping pong.

Look a little closer.
What you'll see is ex-soccer Moms and Dads, with a cocktail in one hand and a smart phone in the other. By the end pf the night the soberest of the two will drive home where they with engage in something akin to sex, then call it a night. In a year, or so, they'll get bored and move on to something else, like AA.
Did you ever wonder why there is so much turn-over in League?

Really? I've come back to pool after a 15 year hiatus and I haven't seen that yet. Wrestling on the other hand.....now those stereotypes are fairly common.

Maybe it's just me, but I see a disproportionate amount of weird in the pool world, more than poker, golf, ping pong, darts, cars etc etc... I mean there's nothing wrong with it and it makes it for an interesting culture, I'm not knocking anyone bc we all go through shit in this disaster called life, but pool seems to be a magnate for it. What's the draw to the game. Is it the acceptance of anyone interested in this game called obsession, or what? Any thoughts? I knew the rocket. An old vet who drank himself stupid and popped pills and smoked weed from morning tonight at the table everyday till close, until he inevitably lost it and got send home. I'm sure the man saw some shit in life and I was sympathetic. I knew one that didn't work and lived on people's couches for the last ten years just to play pool. Doesn't talk, doesn't get mad, just plays pool. All day, everyday. He needs enough money to play and gamble, has gone day without a meal but played pool all day. All skin and bones. If you offered him half your sandwich he'd take it, but he wouldn't spend money on food bc he needed it for pool. The generate gambler we all know, the druggie who stays sober enough to play some of the best pool you'll ever see, the tattooed jailbird who can play some, the divorced father of three who's a feadbeat but he's got the cash to play all day. Just some wonderful characters even though you wouldn't invite them in your home.

My $0.02 is

Whether it is a bar or pool room, pool is predominately hosted in places that serve alcohol. That is my best answer. I think I realized this after I quit drinking. I love pool, working on pool tables and I am VERY happy I don't drink anymore!!! :)

Pool tourney night is almost a guarantee that you will smell weed on people all night long.I dislike bars, drunks, and druggies and if it was not for pool I have virtually zero contact with that nonsense in normal life.

There are always a very small secular group of people that are the most "colorful" crayons in the box in all walks of life. You do have to remember that this is a very small minority that is our world of pool.

I tend to agree with the bar aspect of it. When I was growing up in Pittsburgh, PA there was a state law banning alcohol in poll halls. To me this was the greatest law of all time. The people in Jimmy Marino's Golden Cue in Bridgeville were people that really liked the game of pool. Almost all of them nice guys that had real jobs during the day or were retired. Once pool became a bar game the end came to pass and the scum rose to the surface.

Pool is an outlet and someplace for someone to go to escape the everyday BS in life and for the degens it's extra loads of BS we are talking about.
