Ginacue Box Cue: The First Box Cue Ever Made

Hi All,

Ginacue (Ernie Gutierrez) made the first box cue ever built, for Champagne Eddie Kelly in 1969.
Kelly traveled the country gambling with the cue, and it had a significant influence on many of the top cuemakers of the day.

Most top cuemakers have made box cues, including Gus and Barry Szamboti, Bill Stroud (Josswest), Bill Schick,
David Kersenbrock, Dennis Searing, Ron Haley, Joel Hercek, Tim Scruggs, Andy Gilbert, Paul Mottey and a host of others.
In many cases, box cues are among the most expensive cues they made.

As part of my cue collection, I am honored to own the first two box cues ever made, both by Ernie Gutierrez, both with full provenance.
I was recently asked to post some pictures of the first box cue made, the ebony Ginacue with ivory boxes.
If you have never seen the cue, you will recognize it based on box cues made over the years since 1969 by others.

I hope you enjoy the cue as much as I do. (It was made the year Rhoda and I got married. Whew!)

Snooker Theory,
No favorites, I like’em all.
The white forearm cue is a Joss West cue that was made for Richie Florence.
The forearm is made of an artificial ivory material that Bill used sometimes on joints and buttcaps, called ivory implex.
A plasticized material of some sort, over a core. This cue is the first cue ever built with a cored forearm.
I believe he delivered the cue to Richie in Las Vegas at a big event. One of three he made like this, all slightly different.

Magnificent, Will, to have Champagne Ed Kelly's box cue. You know I'm a fan of box cues.

There's another box cue I wish you'd have ended up with. Well, I wish I ended up with it. There was a Baltimore player who went by Bo Diddley, back in the early to mid 70s. He played with a Joss ebony forearm box cue, very fancy, very similar to many you have. He played at Gentlemens Cue, Reisterstown, Maryland. Good player. And great cue.

All the best,
Hoot

Tommy,
Like a dream. Nice weight, great balance and sound upon strike.
I’ve had it over to Shooters Olathe many times, and let anyone hit balls with it that wants to, just like I do with any of my cues.
Everyone likes it a lot!

A museum piece, not just hanging on a wall.
