Don't know, never read it - although I do plan to at some point. One thing is for sure though, plenty of crazies out there. Also being the guy I was talking about was the road partner of one of the best known road guys for 40 years on the east coast it is also quite possible that indeed it is the same person that is referred to in the book - only they were in town under assumed names. If u are doubting authenticity of story im quite certain there are quite a few old J & J crew that can verify this story. Hell maybe even JAM as im pretty sure she knows of the squirel im speaking of.

Oh, I'm not saying your guy didn't do it, just that I think Beard was writing about someone else. I know I've heard that story before, is all.

I for one ,miss the hustlers
I used to love when they offered me games

Sometimes I won

what I don't like is the absence of action

maybe it is a little seedy, but that was part of the glamour
that used to be pool

I don't like the idea of the ones looking to borrow money

I don't feel like I owe them anything, but If they want to match up

come on over

Well said!

Hustling is alive and well. The difference is whether you are the windshield or the bug. Nobody calls themselves a hustler because they negotiate a spot they think they will win at but who the hell negotiates a spot they think they can't win at? By the standards applied on this forum every pool gambler is a hustler.

A few may kid themselves and others that they try to make a dead even game but the truth is obvious reading this forum. Pretty much every time someone has to play hard they say they outran the nuts. No, if you make an honest game you are supposed to have to play your best to win.

Some outright con's are a bit different but very few con's can snare an innocent victim. Almost every con relies on the victim's greed. Hustlers are always the easiest victims to hustle, not the hardest. They are always on the lookout for easy cash and dangling it in front of them draws them like flies. People lined up a hundred deep to try to play Viffer awhile back. Were any of them really planning on risking big money giving him what they thought was a fair game? Maybe one in twenty and that is being generous.

Now the hustle is in negotiating the spot. I'm sure many still hide their speed too. We just don't call it hustling when we are the ones doing it.

Well said, I cannot think of any wording that describes the hustle better than these. Everyone wants the edge. The edge gives you just that , an edge. The ability to bet high, however some road dogs can over come the edge by the bet.

IMO if someone agrees to gamble, take a bet, etc. then that particular person is at his/her own risk of getting beat or hustled. There is always the uncertainty of whether or not someone is playing their speed or just dumping. There is also the question of, is the individual just having a bad day, had a few to many drinks, etc. I do get that , at times, players will hustle their opponents but it is up to the person they are playing to either say no or start to realize they are getting hustled.

Wow, its OK to lie, cheat and steal if its from an adult or from someone "wealthy". I can't believe what I read on here sometimes.

Some think of themselves as modern day Robin Hoods. But I think it is really more kind of like the welfare mentality.
I once heard a hustler justifying acting drunk and taking peoples money.
His logic was that if they wanted to take advantage of a drunk man then he felt they had low morals and deserved to have their money taken. He felt he was only stealing from other thieves.

As the Flim Flam man said 'you can't cheat an honest man, as soon as he thinks he's going to get something for nothing, he's no longer honest'. All hustles depend on the victim's greed to get the best of them.

Everyone wants the upperhand when it comes to gambling(look at casinos) but
if your setting someone up or dumping isn't a hustle imo, its being a jerkoff.
A great hustler does it tactfully without selling out his own mother.
What makes me laugh is when I've seen guys screw over another, the same
guy will ***** and moan when the tables are reversed.
Hustlers are like gangters, you might think your one until you meet a real
one face to face.
