That your opponent asked you if you threw the match ?

Here is what went down . I faced another 5 in 8 ball in a 4-4 race. I was up 3-0 then I just started shooting bad and lost 4-3.

About 45 minutes later I threw myself in 9 ball and the other captain throws the same guy I had played 8 ball against. He is a 6 in 9 ball though and I am a 5 in both.

He wins the lag and while I start rack in he comes up and whispers to me asking if I had thrown the 8 ball match. I looked at him in disbelief then quickly realized that I had dogged 3 easy 8's and could somewhat understand his thoughts.

I replied no i did not dump and when this 9 ball match was over he would have no doubts if I dumped it or not cause I was gonna curbstomp his ass.

He laughed and went to the head of the table to break. When the match was ver he was not laughing or thinking I may have dumped cause I won 38-32 in a 38-46 race.

I have got some issues going on with my 8 ball game I can't figure out. Things like the above match where I get ahead and just blow it ......loosing to low level players I have never lost to before.....dogging easy 8's or not selecting the right pattern.

I am not having that problem in 9 ball. Actually its just the opposite. I am playing better in 9 than I ever have and I have always played better in 8 ball .....until now.

I'm a 6 in APA 8 ball and I do the same thing. Will go from hot to cold at the flip of a switch. There's a wild gap between my ceiling and my floor.

I'm convinced that there must be something about my pre-shot routine or stroke that's inconsistent and throws me off, but I can't figure out what exactly that is or what triggers it. Wish I had more table time to figure it out than I do.

I was a 6 in 8 ball for one session a few years ago. Not really sure why I have never been able to get back at that level again. Maybe something to do with I quit trying to run out every rack and started playing more 2 way shots and some defense.

I have been raised to a 6 and lowered back to a 5 four times over the past year in 9 ball. Like you...imy game goes up and down like a yo yo ....lol.

I am on a heckuva roll in 9 ball right now and enjoying the heck out if it while it lasts. 14-2 over all with some pretty good lop sided wins .

Ones that recall pretty vividly.

38-32 vs a 6
38-33 vs a 6
38-33 vs another 6
38-34 vs a 7
38-30 vs another 7
38-12 vs a 5 on a gold crown which I seldom play on....valleys 90% of the time

Last night was 38-23 vs a 7 but the major reason for the score was his terrible luck breaking. He gave me bih 3 times on the break and I was able fo rack up quite a few points of his scratches on the break.

In 8 ball I am 2-8. The worse I have ever played in the 6 years I have been in apa. And quite a few of those losses are to people I have never lost to before.

Absolutely. There is a guy that accused me of sandbagging probably 3 years ago, he still won't speak to me. Thing is, that during this match he played just as bad, but I won.
Was he ever pissed, still is.

One thing that has helped my 9 ball game is I had a 9 work with me on my break for an hour one night. I also had some help from a 5 that breaks pretty darn good.

Not sure how much a change break cues has helped because i switched from an Alex brick jump break to a predator bk 111 the same day i got help from the 9 but my break is definitely better than it was before.

Just cant figure out why I am playing so BA in 8 ball now when it has always been my best game.

I've been playing tight for a session or so, a lot of stupid little mistakes. Make hard shots and run outs, miss stupid stuff.

Of course I have but have a funny story about my buddy. We are playing league and he is a sl7. We toss him up and he is shooting terrible. They team captain came over to us to make sure we put up the right players. He was like, are you sure you put you 7 up. I still tease him about it.

I'm not sure you're asking for advise, so here's some, unsolicited.

Don't focus on the score when trying to self-analyze. You could simply be playing exactly the same (or near), but you're getting faulty memory by the score. Do things the Belichick way (and I'm not talking about breaking weird rules that just got invented that year with funny wording). Take the win, but continue analyzing where you can improve.

Most APA 5's need to improve their stroke, shotmaking, pattern play, decision process, break...

To add to this, one jump I noticed in my own game (as well as others), is being able to determine when the right time is to run out the table. I see a lot of 5s try to run out on every turn and that is not a good strategy.

It is a 7's wet dream to see a 5 run 5-6 balls and then miss leaving an open table to either run out or set up the run out with a safety etc. After the break (assuming I made a ball) I try to determine if it is worth going for the run out or not. If it is not worth it, I need to plan ahead on what safety I am going to do to possibly set me up to run out on my next turn, OR what do I need to tie up to make sure my opponent has a very difficult time running out.

Few weeks ago I was accused of sandbagging in league when I had the match won after two games and proceeded to lose the last game after a couple bad misses. It was unpleasant and I was pissed about the accusation.

Unfortunately I'm just a mid level player and my big problem is consistency. I can play really strong for a bit and then, as others have said, like the flip of a switch I can miss simple shots. I wish I knew how to fix it as I'd be a better player! I care way more about that then the small amount of money we get back at the end of a league season.

Advice is always welcome .:)

My post is mainly about playing bad....real bad lol . And then asked if you threw the match because your opponent knows you are a lot better than you played again him.

Lil others have said ....my game runs hot and cold....even on the same night. Take last Friday for example. I beat a 7 in 9 ball 38-30 as i mentioned above. Then 30-40 minutes later I pls his wife 8 ball....she is a 4. I lose 3-2 . It just puzzles me how I can pls so great one match and play poorly a half hour later....especially 8 ball.

As for worrying about the score.....i never do. Actually I was amazed after several matches to find out how lop sided some of my wins were. I had no idea during the matches what the score was.

And yea......i have been working on my fundamentals she I have time.....especially my 9 ball break and it realm has improved my game.

Well been there, done that. This past week my opponent was actually talking crap on me to a guy he had no idea I am good friends with as I had to shoot and leave for a prior commitment. I found out about this the next day when me and my buddy met up to play. The guy was saying that there is no way I should be rated a 6, I'm barely a 5.

I was shooting so bad and it wasnt missing easy stuff as I typically made my ball but did shank a few i should not have. My problem was that I was putting the cue ball all over the place and making my next shoot much more difficult, hooking myself or scratching.

Sadly I would have to agree with the guy..... I shot like I was barely a 5. We are only a couple weeks in so I am sure I will see him again.

I have played so bad that anyone with even an ounce of self respect would give the game up.
Not me .
Then I will have a day, that I play so good, it scares me.
This pool is a funny game.
I believe it is just focus, but that's just a guess.
