Family Billiards, in Burlington, NC, will host the fifth stop of the 2009-2010 Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour this weekend, January 30-31. Players of all playing ability will assemble to compare skills and compete for up to $4200 cash in the Main Event ($1000 guaranteed for first place and $1000 guaranteed added).

Family Billiards is located at 2141 N. Church St. in Burlington, NC (phone: 336-227-7499). They have eight 9-ft. Olhausen tables that I have heard nothing but good things about. Each table has a Diamond light with the parabolic grid, virtually eliminating shadow. Jody Gibson, the room owner, has always been very hospitable and is excited about the Jacoby Tour coming through once again. As usual, the pro shop will be open and available for expert cue work all weekend.

We’ll be starting things off with an Early Bird Tournament on Friday night at 7pm. Register for the Main Event by 12:30pm on Saturday. Races to 7 on both sides, $65 entry fee plus registration. The Junior Tournament and Ladies’ Tournament will begin on Saturday at 11:00am. Finally, we’ll have the Second Chance Tournament at 3pm on Sunday.

All four mini tournaments (Early Bird Tournament, Junior Tournament, Ladies’ Tournament and Second Chance Tournament) will be races to 5 on both sides, one race to 7 in final, $20 entry fee plus registration. Anyone can play in the mini tournaments. However, juniors must not have their 20th birthday in 2010 and, of course, only ladies in the Ladies’ Tournament.

All tournaments (Main Event, as well as mini tournaments) on the Jacoby Tour will be double elimination (modified), rack your own, winner breaks.

If you’re planning to play multiple times on the 2009-2010 Jacoby Tour, you can save quite a bit in registration fees by purchasing a 2009-2010 tour card for only $50. Registration fees are $5 for mini tournaments and $15 for the Main Event. There are 11 more events on the 2009-2010 schedule, so you can really save with a tour card.

We’ll have a Break Contest around 1:00 on Saturday. $10 entry and anyone can play. Around 4:00, we’ll do a Break-and-Run that is now at $75 per ball!!! Only players in the Main Event can buy tickets and they’re limited to 100 tickets per player, but anyone can ‘back’ a player. Tickets are 1 - $5, 5 - $20, 20 - $50 and 50 - $100.

As usual, I’ll have a really nice Jacoby that I’ll be raffling. Tickets are 1 - $5, 5 - $20, 20 - $50 and 50 - $100 and you don’t have to be present to win.

Congratulations to Keith Bennett, who defeated Shawn “Big Bubba” Putnam (11-3) in the final match at On The Snap Billiards in Fuquay Varina to win the fourth event of the 2009-2010 season. Keith earned $1000 for first place, while Shawn settled for $500 and second place. After the first four events of the 2009-2010 tour, the race for Player of the Year is heating up, but there is a lot of pool yet to be played!

The next event will be on March 6-7 (location to be announced). As usual, it will be $1000 added and $1000 for first place plus you’ll have a chance at a minimum of $500 in the Break-and-Run!

A good weekend to play pool!!

Snow and, possibly, ice are predicted for the area on Saturday night. Please be aware of these conditions and plan your travel accordingly.

The event will go on as planned with a 2-hr. delay in the normal schedule.

Therefore, the pool room will open at noon, register by 2:30, the player auction will be at 3:00 and the Break Contest will immediately follow the player auction. Main Event matches will begin right after the Break Contest.

Please use your own best judgement when deciding whether to travel and when. Above all, be safe.

For those who do find their way to Family Billiards this weekend, it is still $1000 added and there will be $1000 waiting for the winner!

Let the kids play in the snow. This should be a good weekend to play pool!!

Update!

We are still on a 2-hr. delay. Register by 2:30 for the Main Event and you'll have a chance to win $1000 at Family Billiards in Burlington, NC!!

I just drove the 6-mile round trip from the hotel to the pool room and had no problem. And no, I was not in 4WD. Then, I drove 6 miles on I-40. I was averaging 45-50 and everybody else was keeping the same pace. I think as more tracks are made and break up the accumulation, it creates a surface that offers more traction.

Of course, you'll have to decide for yourself. I hope you that whatever you do, you stay safe.

These things I do know:
$1000 added
$1000 first place, guaranteed
There will be a final match (race to 11).
The tournament will finish on Sunday.
Only players in the money will play on Sunday.

If you are going to play in the tournament, be prepared to return on Sunday. If that means an overnight stay, the Days Inn is offering a very reasonable rate of $49.99. Their number is 366-578-2666.

Safety first! - Doug
