Like the US Open or World ?

Is he considered the best straight pool player in the world now?

There used to be a player in Dallas that was great at straight pool
named Dick Lane,he played much different than Schmidt, made all easy short shots, broke the rack softly

He beat us mortals 100 no count to 20 balls total,

Schmidt plays an entirely different game

Yes, he won the US Open 9-ball about ten years ago. He has never been the best 14.1 player in the world and nothing he does without a world class opponent will change that. He is, though, among the elite in the discipline and has been for at least fifteen years. Don't overlook that John won the 10-ball at Super Biliard Expo and also the Derby City 1-pocket event, so he has shown great skill in multiple disciplines and deserves great respect for it.

Dick Lane is a very well-known player who was among the elite, especially in the late 1980's. He wasn't quite in a category with Steve Mizerak, Mike Sigel, Allen Hopkins, Ray Martin or Dallas West, but he was probably one of America's ten best at straight pool.

He won the World Tournament Straight Pool Championship in 2012 beating Efren in the final which earned him the title of World Champion.

He won the diamond 10 ball tournament at the super billiards expo which is a major stop. At least every pro that matters is there. He beat Corey in the final I believe. I was there but my memory is hazy lol I remember it was the first year of the ob break cue

Yep. He's handed out several a55 whippings over the years. Some of those beatdowns were brutal.

There's a reason he has multiple 400+ runs and one 600+ run..lol....he's an a55kicker but, some want to act like he's a cream puff.

I'm starting to reevaluate how I accept people "word".

There are some on here that has in the past, told stories about the GREATS and I believed them but, after the pure horse crap that they have spouted, well, everything they "claim" in the future.......well, I'll pass.

John also won the Sands tourney about 20 years ago when it was a full field of 128, chock full of the best players on the planet.

The proof is in the pudding. John ranks among the best at all disciplines. Don't be confused, lol.....

The guy is an extreme natural talent. When he wants to put in the work and dedicate himself to pool, no one has to like it.

great commentator

He also is one of the best commentators on Accu-stats. One of my fave lines of his is after Mark Wilson asks him if he has any groupies. " Yeah I have groupies, they are 60 year old men with chili stains on their shirts".

John won the DCC 1-pocket tournament. He isn't a 1 pocket specialist, and frankly, IMO, that was his best win.

Take most other players who are 14.1 or 9/10 ball players and see how they doing playing 1 pocket. Also take a great 1-pocket players and IMO, they are normally not tops anywhere else.

Not to mention he's pretty strong playing for the cash and he's not afraid. I've seen him go at it with Ramil Gallego and Jack Cooney to name a few. Good all around player

Nick Varner is always overlooked in these conversations, he has 2 world 14-1 championships
