Chris's Billiards Chicago

Going through some of my old pics over the holiday weekend I realized that I had a couple of pics of the famous Chris's Billiards of Chicago, where scenes from The Color Of Money were filmed...I know there have been guys in the past who have wondered/asked what this old school poolroom looks like (up on the second floor, old support pillars, old pool photos and posters on the walls, worn 40 yr. old carpeting and linoleum, etc.), so I thought I'd post up these pics...these pics were taken on a quiet afternoon...

Chris's is only so-so for action nowadays, but during the 80's-90's there was real good and constant action...

Chris's is a huge poolroom - 45 tables - these two pics are of the main front room which has 15 tables, and a 6/12 snooker table - this room is where most of the action games takes place...to the right of this room is a separate, slightly smaller room with 10 tables, and through the back archways is a huge room - as big as the first two rooms combined...one of the things that's always been great about Chris's Billiards is that since it's so big, there's tons of room, and comfortable arm chairs, around all of the tables.

Chris's Billiards is a great room! I've been playing in there since it opened in the 70's, and teaching there (off and on) for the past 25+ years. There is great pool memorabilia on all the walls, in all three rooms. Check it out the next time you're there!

Thanks for posting those pics! It will be a real shame if the doors ever close on such a nostalgic place.

PS, Voo, I'm glad you're feeling better...and unfortunately I know what that's all about, because I'm going through some health problems myself.

I got to Chicago once or twice a year. I make a pilgrimage to Chris' every time. When I walk up the stairs my friend between my legs gets exited.

God I love that place.

You shouldn't carry your cue between your legs

Chris's is a great place to shoot, I have been there a couple times and hopefully if the bca league starts up like they're planning to do, i'll be getting into that.

Chris'...the 'real' versus the 'reel'

When I enter Chris', the Color of Money is far from my mind.

First I see Joe Diaz at the old Brunswick carom table telling a friend of
mine in a stern but kind and gentle voice(he had had just butchered a shot)
"Do not hit a ball hard in my presence."

Then it's George Fels cussing himself while trying to beat Willie's 526.

And the magic of Raymond Ceulemans and Sang Lee.

..Efren winning a consolation tournament while playing 3-cushion like
a 'pool player'.

Don 'the preacher' Feeney running a 100 at snooker, a 100 at straight pool,
and running double figures at 3-cushion.(I think on the same day)

..me haggling with John Wright over a Tascarella that I just had to have.

..me in a difficult position on a Vehoven and arguing with a dozen players
about how to play it (the advice and the humor were priceless)

...shopping for cotton sweaters in the store under Chris' and having a cop
walk in and ask "Who owns the Ramcharger parked on the yellow line?"
..and I say "It's mine, I'll move it." ..and he says "Take your time."
A 'beat cop' who looks after his neighborhood.....

Yeah, Chris' is my kind of pool hall....
...and Chicago is my kind of town

The Color of Money was a bit alright too

Yeah all that and more. What ever happened to the nut-job trying to make 50 balls in one shot in the back room? Video camera. 20 minutes of setup and talking to himself followed by a crushing should of 50 balls moving.

He's not a nut job...

...his name is Jeff Gates. He's video-recorded the pocketing of 30 balls, 40 balls, and all numbers in between; he may even have achieved the low 40s. Haven't seen him in over a year, though. GF

Mr. Fels,
Sorry I didn't mean to insult the guy...but he did seem a bit "off". Thx with helping me with my Straight Pool a few months ago. I finally ran a couple of 100's (in practice). Nobody plays straight pool up here and thus you have nothing to reference to.
