what are y'all playing with in league, cue wise ???

I play with a Hammond.

I'm going to NAPA nationals in Atlanta this June and I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it; I am a pessimist and have zero faith that the stick will make it to Atlanta if I put it in my suitcase. I would be crushed if that cue was stolen (it was a gift... one of the nicest gifts I've ever received) but I don't have a cheap cue that plays like it.

I guess I have to make a drive to a real poolroom and try to find a cheaper stick that plays similarly.

Erwin Plain Jane Rosewood/BEM Butt
Tiger Ultra X LD Shaft
McDermott G-Core Shaft (currently trying to sell it)
Schmelke Cocobolo Full Splice Break Cue
Purple Heart Break Shaft
Maple Break Shaft (Identical to the purple heart shaft)
Poison VX Jump Cue
All of it fits in my JB Rugged 2x5

LOVE that purple heart shaft Dave! Did that come with the Schmelke??? How does it hit? (Sorry for the hijack)

STIFF! lol
But not like a metal rod. It does have flex too it. I use it for 9 ball when I don't break as hard. They both have Schmelke's leather break tip, which is really nice. It's a Schmelke JB00: http://schmelkecue.com/jb00-cocobola-break-cue-purpleheart-shaft.html

I found it on Ebay new for $150 and called David Schmelke to make me the new maple shaft.

i am eligible for the napa nationals also. starting out to be a rough year so far for me ...if finances improve i plan on being there also. i played last year when it was in tunica. finished 1 round outa the the money.

i made my 1st trip to vegas this year in apa and had similar thoughts as you. i bought a cheap premier sneaky and it plays just as good or better than my most expensive cue. good luck to you.

Thanks. Everything sort of lined up to enable me to plan the Atlanta trip. I'm not sure that I'll get back again.

As for the cue; I have a Players and a really old McDermott (bought it used in '98) but neither play like the Hammond. The McD might be OK if I get a new shaft for it.

Speaking of which, I just bought a McDermott D1 off the wanted/for sale section here.

I'm going to put my McDermott G-Core shaft on it and use it for the nights we play in the stink holes.

Wayne

I shoot with my "Cues by Wayne" and have recently added an OB shaft to it, its legit and hits solid.

I went 4-2 in 9ball lastnight. I should have won my last game but I also should have lost a previous game so it all evens out.

I shoot with the cue in my sig. Sometimes I'll even break out my J&J j/b, mostly to jump, though I prefer to kick when it's reasonable.

i have an alex brick jump break. as you know apa does not allow jump cues but you can jump with a full cue. i am like you i prefer to kick but have jumped succesfully with my brick. the 1st time i ever tried it i not only hit the object ball but pocketed it. the other captain said hey you cant do that.

i told him being that he is a captain he oughta study the rule book. the lo happened to be across the room so he went and asked him . he said yea its legal. like i said i prefer to kick every time i can. i just resort to jumping when i think i cannot kick succesfully.

so far i am 50/50 in 6 attempts.

I thought the rule book said "regular shooting cue"?

If it's legal to jump with my breaker, I'd be popping balls all over the place.

I'm not sure that you can switch to something like a j/b, but I could be wrong. I thought it had to be a 'playing' cue. I still suck with a jump cue, so I work on jumping with my playing cue.. which I also suck at.

there is nothing in the rule book that says you cannot switch cues. .the gray area is what constitutes a playing cue.

to avoid conflicts concerning the gray area if i switch to my break cue to make a jump i finish the inning out shooting with it. nothing in the rule book states you cannot shoot with a break stick.

That's true.

No Rules on Tip Material, Weight, Original Design Intent (if it was designed as a break cue), or any rules on switching cues.

I used to own a full splice fancy sneaky with an elkmaster pressed tip and I jumped full balls with it. I can't do the same with my Erwin and Tiger shaft though :(

i like to test myself from time to time. i have shot entire matches and won shooting with a g10 ferrule tip combo.

if you can shoot a dozen or so innings with plastic for a tip without miscueing you can shoot with anything.:D not worth a crap for jumping though.lol

I started out jumping with a Lucasi L-2000JC with a leather tip.
Then switched to an Action Jump/Break with a one piece phenolic tip.
Then to a J&J Jump Cue (made a video to sell it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pStRChhkHuo
Then I switched to a J&J Jump/Break and finally the Schmelke breaker and Poison VX.

That doesn't include the other dedicated breakers I had and jumped with. I started playing pool right when jump cues became popular with 9ball and 10ball. So I kind of grew up with jump cues, if you will.

I have asked my LO about this a few times, and he says its OK so long as its a full length cue. So I try it now and again. I get a few odd stares, cuz other than the 7 on my team, no one here tries it.

Made a couple of good hits, haven't pocketed one doing so yet.

If I ever go to Vegas, I'll make sure to ask someone official before attempting it, tho.

APA you can not change cues. From the rule book
"Massé and jump shots are legal, when executed properly (see MASSÉ
SHOTS and JUMP SHOTS described in Definitions), but such shots
must be attempted using a regular shooting cue (see REGULAR
SHOOTING CUE described in Definitions). Players are not allowed to
break down their cues or switch to specialty cues (such as cues designed
for jumping and/or breaking) to attempt massé or jump shots."

I do not know about other leagues. Trying to bend the rules, you might be able to get away with it. I have been known to play with my break cue but never in league. If I started a match with it, I would in clear conscious have no problem using it for jumps etc. But I would never try to bend the rule to the point of playing with my player and claiming to just change to a different play cue and use my j/b.
