Build diary Treadway Arctic Birch and Tulipwood

Josh is building me quite an interesting cue.

I have an order in with Josh for a "big" cue that will be quite unique in design.

But it will also have some experimental elements to the cue such as a compression fit titanium joint, modified taper and some other unique structural elements I cannot share.

We thought we would build a Merry Widow just to test all the new elements but this has grown into quite an interesting cue you might enjoy seeing.

The ring design is mine. Both pieces of wood are exceptional. The birch looks somewhat like curly maple but isnt. When finished it should be very high chatoyancy.

Attached is the model I created (with Jimm Vo's help) and some early build pictures.

It is very different hope you like it.

Looking very nice,
I am not a fan of any Segmented handles,
BUT,
I realy like Treadway cues....
I picked up a 4 pointer here in Tulsa last weekend-
Absolutely great playing cue....
Wood to wood flat faced joint with radial pin
I will get some pics and post

Nice. I am a big fan of his cues as well. Interestingly I am not a big fan of segmented handles but when I designed the big rings at top and bottom it looked sort of bare and the segmented handle really balances out the ting design. Look forward to seeing yours.

Obviously this one will also have a very different joint design.

Hi Will

The fact that you like the design makes me really happy. It is a little out there in some ways and you have a very discerning and experienced eye so you liking it makes me feel way more comfortable that I am going down the right path.

Johnny (hopefully there is another ICCS some day)

Love his cues. That does look great. I just ordered an ebony merry widow with an white and black ebony handle. Told him do as he wishes. Now just time to kill years.

Yeah usually I just let the cuemaker do most of the design but this was sort of the reverse. He picked the arctic birch and I wound up doing the rest of the design. Should have new pics soon

flame birch is a spectacular wood.
Also on paper, yellow birch has attributes equal, sometimes slightly better than maple.

Interesting to do a true "fiddle back" match to get the tiger stripes 360 degrees.
Nicely matched. Like others, not fond of segmented cues, but like the colors and proportions on that one.

Little better picture of the Arctic Birch itself

IMO wood with long grains like that tulip wood is what segmented handles are all about. Line up the grains from piece to piece and it breaks the monotony of the long grains strings. Excellent use of that wood and good looking cue.

Some new pics, including the compression fit titanium joint being installed. Still some work to do -inlays for shafts, finishing and more but getting more and more real each day.
