The years I started dogging

I owned a real estate office and my friends pool players worked for me

We all still hung and gambled together but I had started making money and
lost something at pool. Drive, concentration I don't know

I was still a gambling magnet, people always were after me and trying to
bust me

When my buddies watched because the other guys only wanted to play me,
I got scared or something,I went from bad to worse just dogging

louie,Tommy, and John lost money and they actually needed it,but after one loss after another they never said a word. I had the nuts but I could not make a ball

One day I looked them in the eye and said"I'm dogging,I have become a dog,
I can't take off a score,I am throwing your money down the drain"

Raymond said "you sure are"

Everybody laughed and I quit playing for several years, Oh I
took off a few scores at poker or Golf, but I quit pool

Who knows why something like this happens?

Because you are a big hearted person and tried too hard for your friends . I did investments for a living and was always more conservative with opm then my own. I hated to see other people lose.

It could be a function of age. How old were you when this happened? Maybe a decline in testosterone contributes to a decline in confidence?

No you didn't

You didn"t dog it. I've never seen you dog it. I seen you match up bad. But when you"re supppssed get the money you do. A person could do a lot worse than throwing in with you.
Another thing, i"m sorry I didn't let you play shortstop. Remember my birthday is next week. I'm sure you know that all these kind words have nothing to do with me having a birthday next week.
You're good friend and admirer

Don't pay any attention to him. He's just trying to hook a chump. Any day now, he'll be running for City Council.

You lost the killer instinct. Same here. Maybe as we grow older, as other things in life become more important, we grow less dependent on the need to be relentless.

Can't tell you how many times I've had the nuts and walked out even. I watch other players I've come up with who keep pressing and driving it home like nothing else matters but busting the other guy. I used to think they must have a lot of heart to keep that killer instict going. But now I believe it's the other way around - you have to be hard, no heart at all, to sustain that killer instict. The more heart you have, the more likely you're going to ease up and allow the other guy to breathe a little easier.

When you're young, you'll break your back at hard labor so you don't have to when you're old. That's good for the body, but not always so good for the mind. Even old dawgs bark.

"You're never too old to rock and roll."

i was less than 30 years old
i quit for about 10 years

jack hadn't seen me for a few years when i was dogging

when he got me to play again
he asked "how do you know when you were dogging?"

seems to me you always missed those shots

it is so good to have friends that level with you

Yes,November 26 is Jack's birthday he needs a new cue, a
Japanese motorcycle,he can not keep his harley running

He could use a Gold Crown 1 with blue side curtains
A bankroll so can play tough action,he hates to risk his own
unless the action is easy

What am i missing?

oh yes,he likes's ,Bob Dylan and Jan Baez music ,solid black Fellini cases,
He also asked for a pair of signed Cassius Clay boxing Gloves, the red everlast ones

He has my Tad cue and Runde SP 30 so please give him something he likes better

I am still hot about the time he brought me in as a ringer on his company baseball championship game

I had to wear a uniform that belonged to the president of the bank about 2 sizes too small,
I felt like a ballet dancer,but did I whine?

then after i watched the team ,he says where do you want to play

Shortstop, I said,Jack said"that is our best player"

He was a show off liked to show off his arm, like a player who always spins his ball

Jack put me in right field

That was like going together to play pool and jack staking me,
Come to think of it ,"forget Jack's birthday"

Billy knows how Jack is,let him chime in

That is a much better looking dog

I am beginning to regret posting this thread

I was young, after I started playing again I worked my way back to
playing without breaking down

my friends were already gone, I don't know how the dogging went away
and I played a consistent mediocre game ever after

I have a story about and from Ed Kelly about this very subject if you guys ever get bored and
want to hear a learned essay on the various causes of dogging by Eddie Kelly

Eddie and I were playing golf at the Saharah in Vegas

We rather I was being watched closely by Don Williams
the poker player on binoculars,Eddie was supposed to find out how I played
so Don could bet with vigor and confidence

Eddie however had not received his compensation from the previous
business transaction and felt compelled to tell me about their plans

Eddie knew I always counted money correctly and decided to switch allegiance.
I played a very colorful and pitiful game laying it down thick,it had to be thick because don was a genuine duffer.

Eddie and I began to discuss pool, everything from his and Ronnie's games,Eddie beat
Ronnie getting 8 to 7, I asked if he could beat him even"why try?""whats the point?

We discussed Eddie Taylor, who Kelly thought was the best of them all.

But I digress, the subject turned to dogging ( playing poorly or under one's true speed,
missing because of nerves etc )

Eddie waxed eloquently on the subject. Allow me to scatter-shoot with a few quotes or near quotes

There is not a man alive who hasn't dogged at one time

Dogging is caused by many factors and it isn't always money

One guy dogged every time a certain other fella was present

Dogging is caused by concern for what others are thinking

High play may,but doesn't always or even usually cause dogging

Getting a person on tilt may create dogging

Ronnie had a talent for sharking people and causing them to dog

Certain people dog it when they get to trying to look smart,
or be smart,

Overthinking if combined with looking inward, introspection is no friend
to a confident assurance

A different game, spot or feeling can be a cause

Once it starts it seldom is easy to stop

I mentioned that getting behind often had this effect on me

He agreed and said that players like me with poor fundamentals
were easily subject to loss of confidence and said the best remedy was to quit when you get behind

We talked about certain instances were people have come from behind with great
displays of heart

"they usually were favored in the first place but got off to a bad start

Guys that are not great players seldom hit a gear

When the gear has never been there,it is not likely to show up

I suggested that playing better players like I did usually required me
to ask for more weight than I needed because I felt it was hard to win without the nuts

He said I was the kind of guy he liked to bet on when he wanted to win

tough action is hard on everybody and is usually a prelude to going off

I am sure this is all like the "don't eat yellow snow lessons" that our mothers gave us
so that is all for now

Don Williams question
not what I expected with Don
we became friends and he introduced me to others
and we made several games

A lasting relationship until i quit visiting las Vegas about
the time of Jerry's funeral

I found that over the years that when i ran into high stakes players
and they discovered that I was reliable, straight forward and a wee bit tight

that I made more money with them helping me find good action spots than I did
by beating them

also I saved myself a few beatings by befriending the really sharp ones

Please correct me if I am wrong but didn't Jack and you recently discuss his beginning to build cues again?

Did that not occur?

jack is expecting to have the new cues in a week or two

Remember Jack was the design force behind Libra cues

I think Billy Stroud was helpful to Jack back then,at any rate you will be seeing a few of the JACKPOT CUES soon

I mean in less than a month

Jack is such a perfectionist,he drives me crazy

I told him all I wanted was a cue so i could beat Billy
