Last night had a great night, played a strong 4 in 8 in a makeup match and won 5-0. Played a six and won 5-0 as well.

Got interesting later when a guy used his full length jump cue to jump a ball against another player on my team. He jumped it off the table so in the end it didn't matter, but he tried to claim it is his second playing cue. He didn't shoot any other shots other than the jump shot with it. I told him off after the match (normally I'm the most calm and nice guy) but he is also a known sandbagger. I usually don't let any of this bother me but the guy was so smug in saying it's his second playing cue and not a jump cue and yes it has a harder tip but it wasn't phenolic so it's within the rules.

I asked him when is the last time SVB used two playing cues in a match to which he replied, "you're comparing me to him""?"

So i asked when is the last time anyone in league used two playing cues, to which he had no response, and tried to mumble he used it for other shots before in other matches. So I asked him how many shots did you use it for in your 9 racks of 8 ball tonight, to which he softly said, "one."

"So it's your jump cue then."

Again I don't sweat the small stuff usually, people that want to waste money sandbagging, that's their loss. I have a great team with great friends and enjoy this game. Maybe the problem isn't with him but with APA. Maybe they should just say no jumping at all, or allow jump cues. I've been playing 4 years, one night a week and have progressed pretty far, I can only imagine how much more fun and enjoyment these people that play 2,3 or even 4 nights a week would get if they shot their best every time and realized it's a lot cheaper to buy a 200 dollar flight to vegas than it is to sandbag for years paying weekly fees and bar tabs trying to qualify for vegas. It feels a lot better to progress in skill level than it does constantly limiting yourself by trying to maintain a certain low skill level. How some people have played for 10+ years and are still a 3 or 4 is somewhat pathetic to me. Anyways, rant over.

APA does not allow jump cues? Odd since they try to make the game easier for players. Are they OK with a separate break cue? If that is OK, why can't you use that to jump with if you don't take it apart to jump length?

Rules state you can only jump with your playing cue which is the cue you use to play most your shots. Rule causes a lot of drama though

This has come up more than once for me as well. Here's what the APA has to say about Jump, Break, and Shooting Cues.

(START)
Jump Cues – A specialty cue designed for attempting jump shots (see JUMP
SHOTS described in definitions). They may not be used to perform jump
shots or massé shots (see MASSÉ SHOTS described in definitions) in
standard APA League and tournament play.

Break Cues – A specialty cue designed for breaking (see BREAK SHOTS
described in definitions). Sometimes combined with jump cues to form a
jump-break cue, these cues are allowed in APA play for breaking. They may
not be used to perform jump shots or massé shots in standard APA League
and tournament play.

Regular Shooting Cues – Any cue designed to shoot the majority of shots in
a game of pool. These cues may also be used to perform jump shots, massé
shots and break shots in all APA League and tournament play. You may not
“break down” your Regular Shooting Cue to perform a jump shot.
(END)

So you can jump in the APA, but it has to be with the shooting cue, not the break cue.
And there is a definitions section stating that "scooping" is a foul, and not legal for jumping.

Interesting, especially considering that LD shafts that quite a few players use are horrible for jumping. They take out push outs because it confuses players but are OK with them jumping with their full playing cue which is a lot harder to learn than what a push out is.

Not really sure what the drama would be, they can just state you need to use the same cue to jump as you started playing the rack with.

My LO allows us to jump with any full length cue, regardless of purpose. Adds to the confusion, of course.

Tourney yesterday. Quarterfinals, and I am down 0-3 in a race to 4. But I fight hard and win 1, then 2, then get it to 3-3...double hill. I break dry. He runs 6 balls but leaves his last ball hanging. I run all 7 of mine, with an easy bank in the side. I make this bank 9/10 times...not today. I lose, but damn I am proud of my fight.

There have been various interpretations of this rule. It really depends on who you ask,
where you are, and during what specific occasion. The only consistent about the rule
is an actual jump cue is forbidden, and you may break and play with separate cues

Last year I posted I was cutting back on pool and wound up dropping scotch doubles that I had been captain of for 3 years.

Yesterday reminded me why I chose scotch doubles to drop. I played in a captain / co captain scotch doubles tournament and we went 2 and out. Its hard not to get upset at dumb shots your partner attempts.

Well I went home and fell asleep on the couch watching tv. I woke up at 6:30 and noticed I had a text. It was from a player on one of my teams. She said that she and her son were going to go play on a tournament and wanted to know I I wanted to go.

I text and asked where at and what kind. She replied back with the location and that it was a blind draw doubles. I replied I had been in a doubles tournament already today and that I had not played in a blind draw for years because it seemed I always wound up with some one o would not have chosen on my own lol.

She replied well just come on and not expect too much and just have fun shooting pool. So I thought about it and figured it did beat sitting home alone watching tv lol.

I het down there and see that I know most of the people and some had been in the tournament I had been in earlier. Well I get partnered up with a guy I had never seen before. He tells me he had joined apa recently and played at the venue we were at.

I thought ....a 6 huh ?. Well we just might take this thing cause there was not a s/l 6 there.....that i knew of. we Los our first match.....won the second....lost the third and was out.

Now I am well aware that every one has good days and bad days....heck I am the poster child for that saying. Lemme just say that my partner definitely did not play like a 6 last night. A weak 4 would be a generous description of his level of play last night.

I was asked if I would be interested in playing in the race to two 8 ball tournament they have every Friday night. I think I am gonna start playing in that every week but scot h doubles is out from now on unless I just wanna torture myself.

Went into last night's match vs. the 2nd place team with a 10 point lead over them, ended up winning 7-5. I beat a SL6 3-2 in 20 innings...played pretty well with some pretty good defensive shots from both sides.'

I am really having some handicap issues though. right now my team consists of 7,5,4,4,4,4,3. Problem is, my has only been to 1 match in the last 4 weeks. This means I have to sit either my 7 or my 5 every week and put my 4's (myself included) in tough matchups. I need to look at adding another 3 or a 2 next session....

Lorider, I feel the pain. Scotch doubles is always torture. You make a shot, to set up a pattern, and your partner never sees it. They go off on some weird tangent, the road to nowhere It forces me to perform in uncomfortable circumstances, so I keep signing up.

Scotch is easily my favorite format, probably because I concentrate on the fun, and I find less pressure in it.

I think I’ve won about twenty Scotch tournaments including a hi/lo blind draw 8-ball where I drew the worst player in the house (TD’s wife who played just to fill the last spot). We won undefeated.

I have one rule playing Scotch: no saying sorry.

Seems like it has been a few weeks since I posted.
APA 8-ball (SL5) - I haven't played much lately. I was out one week for work and had a few where we played other players. This Monday I played a pretty good SL6. He definitely gave me more chances than he should have, but I played pretty dang good and won with him needing 2 games (don't remember if that race is 3-4 or 4-5). Our session is over, so unless we get the tournament playoff spot I'll finish the session 7 of 11.

In-house - I have been telling the owner/operator (who is on my team) for weeks that they weren't keeping up with my matches played. They had me down with only 3 matches, and I was actually playing my 6th. Well this past week they updated my record to 5-0 and it bumped me from an SL4 to an SL6! I couldn't believe it. I know I'm a SL5, and I'm playing pretty good right now, but I don't think I'm at all a SL6. I won a match last night 4-0 against a SL5. Only one game was more than 2 innings and I was very happy with my performance. I definitely still missed some shots I shouldn't have and played a few safeties terribly, but it is great to see a steady improvement throughout this session.

My league has a set of by-laws that are specific to play in our league matches, and there is a section on Jump Shots:

13. JUMP SHOTS
Jump Shots are legal in APA if executed correctly (player must strike the cue ball above the equator of the ball in a downward motion). Scooping the cue ball to jump it is NOT legal. You must use the stick with which you are shooting the match (or your breaking cue that is being used for the match) when attempting to execute a jump shot. You cannot break the cue stick down or add anything to the cue for the purpose of the shot. Short cues designed for jump shots are not allowed during regular league play (except in Masters Division). All cues used must be standard length.

I like the specifics about how a jump shot has to be in a downward motion, too often you have people scooping for jump shots, and the APA rule book isn't as specific in its wording.
That line about "all cues used must be standard length" is violated frequently in a few bars that don't have too much room around their tables. Almost every bar has short sticks for those shots, and a few people in the league even carry a kids cue for those shots. Nobody has ever brought it up, because everyone uses them.

So this is good, but as you said, it's a "by-law" for your local league. Which is OK but when it comes to competing nationally may cause issues for those that don't read the national rules and say "well this is how WE do it in my town".

Funny thing is that the APA of all things does not allow jump cues, but pro players can use them in almost all events. Sigh...

The no scooping part is really a part of any general pool rule, the other side of the coin is that APA and some other leagues modify the rules enough that some games are no longer like the standard rules. Like APA 9 ball which is basically straight pool played in rotation LOL

Lost my 9 ball match 3-3 against a guy that was 5 last season (and is a three now). Just crawls right up my a$$ when I have to give 5-3 to a guy that plays like a 5.

Had a better matchup in 8 ball, 5/5 race, won 5/4, the other guy played really well but I never felt like the match was out of hand or that I was in danger of losing.

Also won 80 bucks in an 8 ball tournament Sunday night and after that was over beat the 9 ball ghost 7-2 and the 8 ball ghost 7-5.

Finally starting to feel like I can contend with just about anyone in a fair race.
