Just an oversight. In the 1980's, only Sigel was better at 14.1 than Varner. My bad.

Don't let it happen again lol , I don't know what it is about him that he is often overlooked and he's won just about everything in his day

Although a case can be made for a few others like Lassiter, Sigel, SVB and Eddie Kelly, Nick might well be the best all-around player America has ever produced.

Yep.

Kinda like the Grandmother that smoked 2 packs of cigarettes everyday and lived to be 100.

Some nit is going to bring up the Grandmother....LOL

Ken

Where can I buy some NIT spray? I prefer the stuff that keeps-em away for at least 24 hours but, I would pay handsomely to get "rid" of them for good, eventhough I know that's just a dream.

John also had represented USA at more than 1 Mosconi Cup in the past...in 2006 and
2014

It was 2006 that John won the US Open 9-ball...beat Rudy Luat in the finals.

...and he can win at 14.1 with some pretty tough cookies in the field...
...Maryland championship....year?

Not to mention he's pretty strong playing for the cash and he's not afraid. I've seen him go at it with Ramil Gallego and Jack Cooney to name a few. Good all around player

Exactly! I saw him in an expensive One Pocket match against a "specialist" and John just tortured him....all the while complimenting how good the guy played, LOL. Then trying to set up a follow-up match for the next day. As we all know, there are levels to this game...

John has been playing 1P for at least 25 years that I know of. It’s not like he just picked it up.

I have heard that 14-1 is the best game for getting good at all pool games. So, can't we just say that John Schmidt is one hellofa pool player?

John won the DCC 1-pocket tournament. He isn't a 1 pocket specialist, and frankly, IMO, that was his best win.

Take most other players who are 14.1 or 9/10 ball players and see how they doing playing 1 pocket. Also take a great 1-pocket players and IMO, they are normally not tops anywhere else.

JMO,

Ken

Well Ken, i don't think you theory holds up about 1P players. If you look at the winners of the DCC 1P over the years, you have the likes of:

Efren
Varner
Hall
Joyner
Parica
Owen
Schmidt
Frost
Corey
Busty
Alex
Shane
Thorpe

They all played strong in other games.

Still, for the most part a pretty elite group of players. The point was that "most" players don't excel at 1P and other games, and that remains fairly accurate.

Disagree, as the post stated “great” 1P players, not *most* 1P players.

"Most players" don't excel at ANY game, including One Pocket, when compared against the elite.

So your statement "One Pocket 'specialists' don't do well at other games" holds no weight. Just because that "specialist" might be able to beat up on non-elite players doesn't mean anything. It simply means they are a moderate -sized fish swimming in a little pond.

MOST of the classic one-pocket players didn't start out with one-pocket. They gravitated to it as they progressed in their careers, after excelling at different games.

As players get older, they excel better at games that allow their experience in "moving" to offset the less experienced players "firepower" and, usually, better "eyes".
