This was asked at one pocket.org but
I will ask if this happened in straight pool what is the ruling ?
Your opponent goes to break and miscues
He then takes his cue stick and stops the cue ball
Before it gets to the rack
What happens now?

Some people say that the game does not start until the cue ball hits the rack. Those people know nothing about the real rules and are probably quoting their uncle Zeke incorrectly.

A shot begins when the tip contacts the cue ball. The cue ball is in play at that point and the game has started. This applies to all pool games.

Moving the balls in play by other than a shot is unsportsmanlike conduct. An appropriate penalty for catching the cue ball is 15 points and the doofus is still shooting an opening break shot.

The rules are available for free on-line. Knowing the rules can give you a large advantage when playing. Here they are: https://wpapool.com/rules-of-play/#Continuous-Pool

Bob Jewett)...A shot begins when the tip contacts the cue ball. The cue ball is in play at that point and the game has started...[/QUOTE said:
The traditional BCA rules stated that the game didn’t begin until the CB was struck with the tip AND crossed the head string. Thus a miscue on a CB that never leaves the kitchen on the opening break shouldn’t count. But, once it does, stopping it with the cue IS a serious foul.
