All around efren but 9 ball in there prime Johnny, earl, or bustamante were the best and they have the world 9 ball titles to prove it. In Johnny's prime with his break an shot making I think he's the best 9 ball player ever.

Note that I have not included players from the too-distant past. For example, arguments can be made that Mosconi, Greenleaf, Lassiter, Hoppe, Cranfield, Crane, DeOro, Lindrum, Caras (and others) deserve to be on the list, but I purposely excluded them since it is too difficult (or impossible) for most people to compare them to players in the modern era.

Maybe this has been mentioned already but it isn't really a poll for the GOAT as much as for something like the GIME (greatest in the modern era), or GIRH (greatest in recent history). I understand the reasoning behind excluding early players, but I think that makes the list something other than GOAT. Nitpicking? Maybe, but then I still hate it when people call straight pool matches "races."

Yes. It has been mentioned several times. Again, it is not realistically possible to poll for the true GOAT since most people being polled don't know enough about players from the distant past (especially before 1970, including the early 1900's, the 1800's, the 1700's, etc.). I had to draw the line somewhere and I though 1970 was reasonable since a large percentage of people living today can judge that far back from memory, from YouTube videos, and/or from reliable and readily-available historical records.

Also, I just added this to the first post:

I at least give them honorable mention here. For those who object to this, wherever you see "GOAT" in this thread, read it as GIME (Greatest in the Modern Era) instead.

Regards,
Dave

Very interesting thread!

I know Pagulayan is a popular player. I also know he is a great player. However, I am completely surprised by his move in this second round. He is threatening Earl and Shane for the 2nd "AZB Consensus GOAT" position! :yikes:
